Roberts’ musical journey began long before the Idol stage. Growing up in a faith-filled family<\/a>, he sang in church from a young age. “My grandparents found out I could sing, and I started singing in church,” Roberts shared in an interview. “I had a granddaddy on my dad’s side who was a bishop, and a grandad on my mom’s side was a deacon, so I was in church every time the door opened.”<\/p>\n

Despite his early passion, his path to the Idol crown wasn’t without challenges. Roberts auditioned for the show as a teenager but was told he needed more training. Undeterred, he spent years honing his craft, using constructive criticism to fuel his growth.<\/p>\n

“I didn’t get defeated. I never gave up,” Roberts said. “I took the ‘no’ and turned it into motivation.” That perseverance paid off when he returned to Idol, this time better prepared and more focused on his dream.<\/p>\n

During the finale, Roberts delivered a stirring performance<\/a> of his original single “Heal” and a moving duet with Jelly Roll. The winning moment, however, wasn’t just about music\u2014it was about faith and resilience. “I wasn’t really doing the teaching thing for the money. It was really the kids, [who are] just my inspiration,” Roberts said. “Even if I could go back every now and then, just show up and be a part of something, I plan to do that.”<\/p>\n
