Two American Idol<\/em> contestants, Canaan James Hill and Breanna Nix, are taking their talents, and faith, into the Top Ten. Hill, 17, and Nix, 25, both gave outstanding performances of Christian songs, with Hill performing CeCe Winans\u2019 \u201cGoodness of God\u201d and Nix performing Danny Gokey\u2019s \u201cTell Your Heart to Beat Again.\u201d Judge Luke Bryan, who is also a Christian, said of Hill\u2019s performance, \u201cHe baptizes me every time he sings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both Hill and Nix have been very open about their Christian beliefs on the show, with Hill, who hopes to be a preacher, stating he sometimes felt \u201coverlooked\u201d due to his Christian focus. The pair were joined by season 3 champion, Fantasia Barrino, who was also very open about her faith during her tenure on the show. Barrino is currently working on a Gospel album and shared some advice to Nix, who spoke about the challenges of being an open Christian and the criticism that comes along with that, even from other Christians. \u201cYou know, the show has been a wonderful blessing to me, but the hate sometimes on the internet\u2026 Being a Christian, there is a lot of opinions that come with it. You know, \u2018That\u2019s not what a Christian should wear,\u2019 or, \u2018That Christian shouldn\u2019t sing a song like that,\u2019\u201d Nix commented to Barrino. \u201cI had a comment that said, \u2018She\u2019s not a Christian anymore,\u2019\u201d she later added, \u201cand it devastated me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Barrino offered Nix encouragement. \u201cDoesn\u2019t matter what you sing, You know that you love Him. So, stay away from social media.\u201d \u00a0Judge Carrie Underwood would later mirror Barrino\u2019s words after Nix\u2019s performance, offering an \u201cimportant trick.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s called the \u2018post and ghost.\u2019 You put your stuff out on social media, and you don\u2019t look at the comments. That\u2019s how I live my life,\u201d she said. During practice, Barrino asked about Nix\u2019s decision to sing Gokey\u2019s song for that night\u2019s performance. \u201cThe very first line says, \u2018You\u2019re shattered. That\u2019s kind of like where I am. You know, I feel like a lot of transition is happening,\u201d she said. \u201cHe\u2019s also a very inspirational artist in my life.\u201d After telling Nix she thought Gokey would be proud of her rendition, Barrino arranged for a video call between the two. Gokey encouraged Nix as well, advising that she \u201cthink of a person that needs to hear this,\u201d and that she was about to \u201cset some people free.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nix was the last contestant to make it into the Top Ten. After her performance, she was asked to describe her feelings. \u201cI felt like I was letting everything go, you know? I was singing for everyone, if that makes any sense. There\u2019s many things that we are shattered by and it feels like it\u2019s the end of the world, you know, but this gives us a moment to truly let go,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s exactly what I felt like I was doing.
