Sight & Sound Theaters<\/a> is bringing King David’s epic story to life on its massive stage in Branson, Missouri, with a production that blends visual spectacle, dramatic storytelling, and the timeless themes of the biblical account.<\/p>\n

The show’s creative team worked tirelessly to capture the full scope of David’s journey, from his humble beginnings as a shepherd boy to his rise as a warrior, poet, and king.<\/p>\n

The musical first premiered in 2022 at Sight & Sound’s Lancaster, Pennsylvania, theater before making its debut in Branson, the company’s newer and larger location, on March 8.<\/p>\n

Sight & Sound’s David section<\/a> on its website has some amazing features, including videos <\/a>that go behind the scenes with the show’s directors and producers, who discuss the ambitious production in great detail.<\/p>\n

“The story of David is big,” said Jay Petersheim, the artistic director. “It’s a story from David and his youth to the whole way through his death.”<\/p>\n

Every Sight & Sound production is years in the making, from original concept to writing scripts, casting, production, and creating the soundtrack. Recent productions have included “Queen Esther,” “Daniel” and “Jesus.”<\/p>\n

Crafting such an ambitious take on the life of the “man after God’s own heart” presented numerous challenges before its debut, but the team embraced the opportunity to push the boundaries of what’s possible on stage.<\/p>\n

“Our shows are huge, and so trying to keep things on schedule and trying to cast vision and get people on board and working through things is always a challenge,” said Ryan Miller, the show’s producer.<\/p>\n

One of the most daunting tasks was creating the character of Goliath, the towering Philistine warrior that David famously defeated.<\/p>\n

“Goliath was probably one of the biggest challenges in the story of David,” Petersheim said. “We want to tell it with Sight & Sound drama, and we want to make sure that it’s told with excellence.”<\/p>\n

Despite the obstacles posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which temporarily halted production, the team has persevered, adapting to remote work and gradually rebuilding their creative ensemble.<\/p>\n

“It was very surreal to be here, knowing that everybody else was home because they wanted to be here too, and a little bit of the guilt of being here when they weren’t was tough,” said Troy Thorne, the director of the show production.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, the team’s dedication to the project and their commitment to honoring the biblical story have been the driving forces behind the production.<\/p>\n

“At the core of our telling of his life is a story about David and his relationship and his walk with his Shepherd,” Miller said.<\/p>\n

“David” will premiere on March 8 and run through January 3, 2026. The musical is designed for all ages and is an immersive experience, with the action happening all around the theater.<\/p>\n

“Whenever we work on these stories on our stage, it has to be visual, and it’s got to be compelling, and it’s got to have some wow factor to it,” said writer Jeff Bender.<\/p>\n

Through both of its theaters and packed-out shows, Sight & Sound hosts more than one million viewers every year. The company has also produced a streaming channel and a film studio.<\/p>\n
