Despite its continuing box office success, One Million Moms is less than thrilled with Wicked. <\/em>While noting the film\u2019s obvious reliance on witchcraft (the two main characters are witches, after all), the group called out the film in a statement<\/a> for its \u201cLGBTQ agenda on families\u201d and \u201cnot-so-discrete crossdressing and men crushing on men.\u201d Fiyero, a character in the movie played by openly gay actor Jonathan Bailey, is seen flirting with both men and women in the film. \u201cInstead of an uplifting Broadway musical about friendship and family, talents and resources were used to create a dark movie that also pushes wokeness. Universal Pictures has traded its usual subtlety for intentionality,\u201d warned the group.<\/p>\n

The group also noted that the recent release is only Part One, with stars hinting that Part Two may include more obvious LGBTQ+ content<\/a>. Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba the Wicked Witch of the West and identifies as queer, has put a lot of focus on the relationship between her character and Ariana Grande\u2019s Glinda. \u201cOh sure. I think Elphie is [queer], she goes wherever the wind goes, I think she loves Glinda. I think she loves love,\u201d she told Gay Times<\/em>. \u201cI don’t think there’s anything wrong with celebrating the deep connection that the both of them have. They do have. It’s a relationship, it’s true love. Which is probably why people are shipping it because what they build with each other is an unbreakable bond and love.\u201d Grande, too has called Glinda \u201ca little in the closet.\u201d \u201cWhether it’s romantic or platonic, Glinda might be a little in the closet, but if there were time you never know. Give it a little more time,\u201d she said, possibly hinting at a more obvious relationship between the two in Part Two.<\/p>\n

Gregory Maguire, author of the novel on which the Broadway musical is based, also confirmed that the lesbian subtext between the two was \u201cintentional.\u201d Speaking to Them<\/em> about the \u201csapphic tension\u201d between Elphaba and Glinda, Maquire said<\/a>, \u201cThat was intentional, and it was modest and restrained and refined in such a way that one could imagine that one of those two young women had felt more than the other and had not wanted to say it.\u201d He also left open the possibility that the relationship became sexual as the pair make their way to Emerald City. \u201cI wanted to propose this possibility, but I did not want to make a declarative statement,\u201d he said. The pair do kiss in the book, though many of the film\u2019s defenders have pointed out that the musical stays largely clear of many of the sexual elements that Maguire included in his book.<\/p>\n

Kristin Chenoweth<\/a>, who portrayed Glinda during the musical\u2019s original run has also supported a queer interpretation of Glinda. She pushed back against criticism from One Million Moms. \u201cEveryone knows the \u2018one million Moms\u2019 are a mere few hundred. Maybe. It\u2019s called entertainment. Artistry. I am a Christian woman [and] originated the role of Glinda and all the silliness that these women spew out of hate,\u201d she wrote. \u201cNo no no. I can\u2019t help it: I try to love em anyways. For they don\u2019t get it. For anyone who wants to see girl power, then go [see] WICKED. Onstage or in a movie theater.\u201d\u00a0Part Two of\u00a0Wicked\u00a0<\/em>is set to premiere on November 21, 2025.<\/span>\u00a0One Million Moms is encouraging viewers to not support the next release, even if they saw Part One.<\/p>\n
