Retired Seattle Storm legend Sue Bird has five Olympic medals and 13 WNBA All-Star selections over her career. Along with those accolades, her aim to inspire future generations of WNBA players still stands. Doll manufacturer Mattel announced that Bird would get her own Barbie doll as part of the company\u2019s 65th anniversary celebration and Summer of Sports campaign, which is dedicated to highlighting women athletes.<\/p>\n

Bird will join Alexa Moreno,\u00a0Mary Fowler,\u00a0Christine Sinclair, Estelle Mossely, Federica Pellegrini, Susana Rodriguez, Ewa Swoboda and\u00a0Venus Williams\u00a0as athletes who are part of the initiative. Bird\u2019s doll is the only one available for purchase. \u201cI grew up playing with Barbies, so it\u2019s kind of a surreal moment when something like this happens,\u201d Bird\u00a0told People<\/em><\/a>. Bird noted that there weren\u2019t any dolls that represented athletes when she was a child and hopes that the doll will inspire children who aspire to be athletes.<\/p>\n

Bird said, \u201cThis is going to have that impact of \u2018seeing it and being it.\u2019 You want to leave an impact that isn\u2019t just defined by winning and losing. Now little girls and boys are going to see a professional women\u2019s basketball player in the form of a Barbie, and they\u2019re going to tap into that story, they\u2019re going to tap into that career, and they\u2019re going to think, \u2018Oh, this is something I could do.\u201d<\/p>\n
