Here are this week’s most inspirational pop culture moments.
Nora Ephron: Telling Tales About Aging That Women Can Relate To
Betty White aside, there’s not a lot of attention being paid to women in their twilight years. In fact, they’re probably the most forgotten demographic out there. Enter Nora Ephron. The 69-year-old writer/director of films like “Sleepless in Seattle” and “Julie & Julia” is speaking on behalf of her contemporaries.
In 2006, she released the book “I Feel Bad About My Neck: And Other Thoughts on Being a Woman,” addressing the issues of aging with the deft humor that she wielded in “When Harry Met Sally.”
Now, rather than cranking out another romantic comedy for posterity, Ephron has returned to the trials and tribulations of women aging, yet again. Her new collection of essays is called “I Remember Nothing: And Other Reflections.” Luckily for all those female fans, who can relate to Ephron’s musings… she can remember enough to make them laugh at the sometimes not-so-funny realities of getting older.
We don’t know what keeps Ephron going strong at 69 and helps her maintain her sense of humor. But whatever it is, we’ll have what she’s having.
Rucker Rocks for the PGA Charities
Darius Rucker, former lead singer of the country band Hootie and the Blowfish, will be singing for charity on the 2011 PGA Tour. His involvement with the PGA marks the first ever sports/entertainment partnership of this kind.
Rucker, who has previously participated in Pro-Am Tournaments himself, has written a song for the tour called “Together, Anything’s Possible.” Proceeds from the iTunes downloads will go directly to PGA charities like The First Tee, an organization working to better the lives of kids through golf.
In conjunction with the release of the song the PGA is also planning a music video, a “making of” video, and PSA’s featuring Darius that will be played during tournament telecasts. In addition, Rucker will attend and perform at various tournaments throughout the 2011 season.
On the PGA website, Rucker said, “It’s truly an honor to partner with the PGA TOUR to bring music and golf together to raise funds for charity. There’s no greater privilege to me than to have an opportunity to be the voice of this organization through my music.”
Visit the PGA TOUR Charities website
Celebrate Movember for a Great Cause
Facial hair challenged readers might not be aware that in some follicle circles November has been renamed Movember (as in the month of the Mo–short for moustache.)
The basic gist is, starting Movember 1 clean-shaven participants began to grow their facial hair entries. By the end of the month, competitions determine the best Mo Bros at Gala Parties around the world in categories ranging from Best Mo in Character to Miss Movember and the coveted Man of Movember 2010. Funds raised benefit men’s health organizations worldwide like the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Livestrong. Last year they raised $42 million for charity.
To join in the fun, you need to register at movember and then start growing. Most events don’t happen until late November or early December, so that gives you over three weeks to grow, groom, trim, and shape to take home the top prize.
There are also some cool tools and videos on the website to give you inspiration. The best one is an iPhone app that allows you to photograph the growth each day and make a stop motion movie documenting your Mo.

The party in Los Angeles takes place at Avalon on December 3, 2010 at 10:00 PM, 1735 Vine St, Los Angeles, CA.
