The New York Mets have retired former right fielder Darryl Strawberry\u2019s jersey number. He began his acceptance speech, \u201cNothing like being home! First, I\u2019d like to give honor to God. I\u2019d like to thank Him for his grace, His mercy, and His love for my life.\u201d He\u2019s the 10th player in Mets\u2019 history to have his number retired. Strawberry went on to thank all who have helped him achieve such a high honor.<\/p>\n

He said at the end of his speech, \u201cThe greatest gift I\u2019ve ever received was accepting the Lord in my life. Not just becoming a baseball player, but becoming a man.\u201d The day after the ceremony, Strawberry took to his social media to reflect on his experience. He wrote, \u201cYesterday was an amazing day with the Mets fans. Tracy and I are incredibly thankful to Steve and Alex Cohen for honoring me by retiring my number 18. We appreciate the love and support from the Mets community and organization. It was a truly special moment that we will cherish forever. Blessed.\u201d<\/p>\n

His wife, Tracy, also commented on the post and\u00a0said<\/a>, \u201cI am overwhelmed with gratitude to God, our family, friends, Steve and Alex Cohen, the entire Mets organization and staff, and the most amazing fans for your tremendous love and support in making this such an incredible day in honoring my amazing husband\u00a0@darrylstrawberry18<\/a>\u00a0Forever Grateful!\u201d Earlier this year, Strawberry suffered a heart attack.\u00a0He said on Sports Spectrum\u2019s podcast, \u201cI think about having my situation, having a massive heart attack\u2014walking around five days, having a heart attack and not even knowing\u2014getting in the hospital at 40 percent. The doctor said, \u2018I don\u2019t know how you\u2019re alive,\u2019 but I\u2019m thinking, \u2018Nobody but Jesus.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
