Cubs relieving pitcher Luke Little was called into Wednesday\u2019s game against the Houston Astros and experienced an unforeseen hiccup. \u201cThe issue was the American flag was on his glove. Pitchers\u2019 gloves, they\u2019re pretty strict about not having white on the pitchers\u2019 gloves,\u201d said Cubs manager Craig Counsell. \u201cApparently, the flag had what could be a distraction to the hitter.\u201d The glove, which Little has used since he played Class A ball, caught the attention of umpires during a routine check of incoming pitchers. An attendant had to get a new glove for Little while he warmed up, with the first one also having an American flag. Eventually, Little had to settle for a glove that hadn\u2019t been broken in. \u201cI had to beat it a little bit, try and get it flexed out. Of all the things to do is breaking in a glove during a game,\u201d said Little.<\/p>\n

He told The Associated Press<\/em> that the glove wasn\u2019t meant to give him an advantage. \u201cThe clubbies told me that they had got an email from MLB that I\u2019m not allowed to wear it. But I just didn\u2019t assume that they were just going to just cut me. It\u2019s not like it has an advantage in the game. It\u2019s not like it blinds the hitters. Just representing my country. Just a whole debacle. Got to get ready without it and throw through it,\u201d he said. On X,<\/a> Little stated that he was \u201cProud to be an American.\u201d The post featured pro wrestling star Hulk Hogan playing the guitar.<\/p>\n

According to the MLB, the Cubs had already been informed that the glove couldn\u2019t be used as the white could be a distraction. The collective bargaining agreement states that without authorization from the commissioner\u2019s office, \u201cNo player or club may attach or otherwise affix or embroider to any portion of the uniform (including the cap and the helmet, batter and catcher) or playing equipment (including gloves), any pins, flags, commemorative patches, decals or other items.\u201d Despite the fiasco, Little was able to play two-thirds of an inning, striking one batter out.
