Last summer, the world was wrapped up in “Barbie” mania, but Shakira and her family were definitely not. In a new interview with Allure<\/a>, the Columbian superstar shared that her sons, Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9, “absolutely hated” the award-winning film. \u201cThey felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Shakira, who shared her sons with ex-boyfriend, former soccer player Gerard Pique, said that she wants her sons to “feel powerful too” while also respecting women. \u201cI like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide,\u201d Shakira said. \u201cI believe in giving women all the tools and the trust that we can do it all without losing our essence, without losing our femininity. I think that men have a purpose in society and women have another purpose as well. We complement each other, and that complement should not be lost. Why not share the load with people who deserve to carry it, who have a duty to carry it as well?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her comments come as a shock to many people as the star has seemingly built her career around themes of women’s empowerment. Her cover story for Allure even celebrates those topics, headlining the story, \u201cShakira\u2019s She-Wolf Feminism.\u201d Just last year, the singer made headlines after her very public breakup with Gerard Pique. Rumors of infidelity on Pique’s side caused fans to side with Shakira, where she even released a diss song in response to the former soccer player’s behavior.<\/p>\n

Ever since the “Barbie” movie released last summer, director Greta Gerwig has not been phased by the criticism saying that the film is “anti-men.” \u201cCertainly, there\u2019s a lot of passion. My hope for the movie is that it\u2019s an invitation for everybody to be part of the party and let go of the things that aren\u2019t necessarily serving us as either women or men,\u201d she\u00a0told the New York Times last summer. \u201cI hope that in all of that passion, if they see it or engage with it, it can give them some of the relief that it gave other people.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
