Immediately after his third Super Bowl win in five seasons, Patrick Mahomes gave God the glory for the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. \u201cIt means a ton. Just the adversity we dealt with this year and to come through. The guys never faltered. I give God the glory,\u201d he said in a post-game interview<\/a> with CBS. He added that God had \u201cchallenged\u201d the team. \u201cHe challenged us to make us better. I am proud of my guys. They did awesome. Legendary.\u201d The Chiefs had been down 10 to 3 at halftime, with Mahomes struggling early with an interception. The team made a comeback after the half, scoring 10 points in the third quarter while keeping the 49ers from scoring. In the 4th<\/sup> quarter, the team scored 6 points to the 49ers\u2019 9, tying the game at 19 and forcing it into overtime.<\/p>\n

The 49ers earned the first possession in overtime and scored a field goal. The Chiefs responded with a 14-play drive, ending when Mahomes threw a three-yard pass to wide receiver Mecole Hardman, making the final score 25-22. Mahomes praised Hardman, whom he said had also faced adversity. \u201cMecole Hardman battled through some adversity this year. Get in that moment, and then make a play. It is special,\u201d he said. Speaking to KSHB 41<\/a> on the field after the big game, Hardman also praised his team for overcoming the odds. \u201cThe last two [Super Bowls] we won; it was like everybody expected us to win it. This one, everybody was counting us out, everybody said we couldn\u2019t do this and couldn\u2019t do that, and now look at us, Super Bowl champs three times,\u201d he said. With talk of the team now being a \u201cdynasty,\u201d Mahomes said there is more to come. \u201cIt’s the start of one. We are not done. We are going to celebrate tonight. … But we are not done. We got a young team. We are going to keep this thing going,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt also acknowledged the team\u2019s efforts and God. \u201cFirst of all, I want to congratulate [head coach] Andy [Reid], the football team, our coaching staff on an incredible performance. It’s been an amazing five-year run. I want to thank the Lord for giving us this opportunity.\u201d He also shared his regret that his parents weren\u2019t able to witness the team\u2019s success. His father, Lamar Hunt<\/a>, founded the team in 1963. He passed away in 2006. Clark Hunt\u2019s mother, Norma, never missed a Super Bowl until this year, having passed away in 2023.\u00a0 \u201cWatching today’s game, I couldn’t help but think about my parents and how proud they would be of this football team,\u201d said Hunt. \u201cThey were the biggest Chiefs fans in the world, and they would have loved celebrating another world championship.\u201dbb<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
