In 2022\u2019s<em>\u00a0Black Panther: Wakanda Forever<\/em>, she plays the lead role.<\/p>\n<p>But Wright, 29, says she nearly quit acting several years ago during a bout of depression. At the time, she was partying and drinking. She told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2022\/nov\/19\/black-panther-star-letitia-wright-interview-chadwick-boseman\">The Guardian<\/a>\u00a0she had lost her values and perspective on life.<\/p>\n<p>Actor Malachi Kirby (2016\u2019s\u00a0<em>Roots<\/em>), a Christian, invited her to an actors\u2019 Bible study. Kirby said God had told him to reach out to her. \u201c[Christianity] gave me the centering I needed, the good foundation I needed, and it helped me to put in perspective what was important for me,\u201d Wright said. \u201cChasing something that is not tangible or not wholesome is not the way I want to go. If I were to pack all this up, I\u2019d still be happy with my faith, the contentment I feel and the connection to God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper asked her: Had she been chasing unwholesome things? \u201cYes, of course. We all chase things,\u201d Wright answered. \u201cYou feel you need a better job, or better role, or more accolades, or more recognition. And I was chasing that. I had been chasing, chasing, chasing, but feeling empty. I realized I don\u2019t have to chase that anymore. If I trust that God has a plan for my life, and I follow that and trust I\u2019m doing the right things, then if people feel it, they will. \u2026 The more I prayed, the more I felt connected and the less anxious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wright comes from a religious family but wanted a personal relationship with Jesus, saying, \u201cMy parents have always had faith, but it wasn\u2019t something we continually practiced. I had to find what worked for me, and I found that Jesus worked for me.\u201d She launched a production company,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.threesixteenproduction.com\/\">Threesixteen<\/a>, that gets its name from the New Testament verse\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/john\/3-16.html\">John 3:16<\/a>. Wright and Boseman were close friends. He shared her faith, she said. \u201cHe definitely believed in God,\u201d she said. \u201cHe grew up a Christian, and his brother was a pastor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In <em>Black Panther: Wakanda Forever<\/em>, she reprises her role as the scientist superhero Shuri. What makes this prolific output all the more impressive is that she is still grieving for the actor\u00a0Chadwick Boseman, her fictional brother in Black Panther and as close to a real brother as she\u2019s had in real life. \u201cI was devastated, as you can imagine. I\u2019ve had to process it through therapy,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s not like I had a two-year break to process it and then came back into the film. We had to start six months after Chad died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wright says Boseman\u2019s death taught her that there\u2019s an illusion where we think we have so much time with people when in reality, we don\u2019t.
