A conservative media watchdog group is bashing Disney Plus for breaking its promise not to add R-rated movies to the streaming platform. Parents Television and Media Council recently\u00a0announced\u00a0<\/a>that Disney Plus \u201cmade R-rated\u00a0Deadpool<\/em>,\u00a0Deadpool 2<\/em>, and\u00a0Logan<\/em>\u00a0available to subscribers today.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2019, the\u00a0blog\u00a0<\/a>\u201cWhat\u2019s On Disney Plus\u201d reported that Disney Plus would only include content with ratings of \u201cPG-13 or softer\u201d and that more adult-oriented content the Walt Disney Company acquired from its purchase of 20th Century Fox would be distributed on its other streaming platform, Hulu.<\/p>\n

PTC President Tim Winter recollected, \u201cThree years ago, the Walt Disney Company made a promise to families. No R-rated movies on Disney+, they said. It\u2019s a family-focused platform, they said. We have Hulu for our edgier adult fare, they said. It turns out they were lying to us. After decades of corporate brilliance establishing itself as the world\u2019s most trusted brand for families, today\u2019s C-level suite at Disney has decided to flush it all down the toilet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noting that \u201cDisney+ points subscribers to its parental controls,\u201d Winter contended that \u201cthe mere presence of R-rated and TV-MA rated content violates the trust and sensibilities of families.\u201d He also expressed disappointment that \u201cwhat took decades to build is now taking mere months to erase.\u201d<\/p>\n

Winter continued, \u201cOne day in the not-too-distant future, business schools will point back to this corrupt corporate U-Turn as they analyze what happened to the once-great Walt Disney Company. In the meantime, families will continue to be woefully underserved by Hollywood.\u201d<\/p>\n

Disney Plus\u2019 embrace of R-rated content is not the first time the streaming service has faced criticism for the material available on the platform. Earlier this year,\u00a0Disney Plus\u00a0added six Marvel television series with ratings of TV-MA to the collection. The \u201cTV-MA\u201d rating is equivalent to an \u201cR\u201d rating, indicating that the material should only be available to mature audiences.<\/p>\n

Even before Disney Plus began content explicitly designed for adults, the company had started incorporating topics critics described as inappropriate for young children into programming marketed as family-friendly.<\/p>\n

Last year, the streaming service announced that a\u00a0reboot\u00a0of the animated series \u201cThe Proud Family\u201d would feature same-sex parents as characters. In 2020, the short film \u201cOut<\/a>,\u201d which included a gay main character, premiered on the platform.<\/p>\n

The reboot of \u201cThe Proud Family\u201d is not the only example of the Walt Disney Company working to introduce LGBT ideology to children. A lesbian was one of the main characters in \u201cOnward,\u201d an animated\u00a0feature film\u00a0produced by Disney\u2019s Pixar Animation Studio.<\/p>\n

Melissa Henson, program director for the PTC, cited the integration of LGBT ideology into children\u2019s programming and Disney Plus\u2019 addition of R-rated content to its portfolio as evidence that \u201cthere seems to be a general movement from Disney away from its roots.\u201d She recalled that founder Walt Disney wanted to \u201cbring families together\u201d by producing content that would \u201cbring families together\u201d and \u201cunite families.\u201d<\/p>\n

Henson says this integration will lead to parents watching R-rated films in one room while children watch appropriate content in another, pulling families apart instead of bringing them together.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
