This year the star-studded event will be aired live on April 25 on ABC. The infamous occasion is to be held partly at its usual venue, Dolby Theater, but much of the event will occur at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released the 2021 nominations list Monday morning. There is much-improved diversity in the nominations, resulting from the Academy’s endeavor to expand their voting members’ demographics. This transition follows their recent scandal that revealed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association did not have even one black member to vote. That controversy appears to have prompted some much-needed change.

This year’s list marked many firsts in Oscar history. Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”) is the first woman of color to obtain a Director nomination. Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”) and Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”) became the first two women in the category ‘Best Director’ at the same time.

These nominations were decided amidst the unprecedented times of this past year. With the pandemic resulting in many theaters’ prolonged closure, audiences viewed new film releases at home via viewing services. Another factor in the change in these nominations was the major cultural shift in society regarding amplifying black voices that were previously overlooked.

Below is the complete list of nominees.

Best Picture

“The Father”
David Parfitt, Jean-Louis Livi and Philippe Carcassonne, Producers

“Judas and the Black Messiah”
Shaka King, Charles D.
