They are a far cry better than last year\u2019s popular choices of \u201cLittle Miss Sunshine\u201d and \u201cThe Departed.\u201d Sure I could rant about such politically correct movies  as \u201cMichael Clayton\u201d receiving too many nominations when other movies were shunned. And I certainly go on another tirade about the overrated documentary \u201cSicko\u201d setting Michael Moore up for a possible win. Then there were foreign films like \u201cFour Months\u201d that were completely overlooked.<br \/>\nStill, I am thrilled  that relative unknown Amy Ryan is nominated for \u201cGone Baby Gone.\u201d  The same goes for Casey Affleck being recognized  for \u201cJesse James.\u201d I am excited than a movie as uncynical as \u201cJuno\u201d has made the short list and that \u201cAway From Her\u201d didn\u2019t totally escape attention. In a tough animation category I am glad &#8220;Ratatouille&#8221; is receiving the props it deserves over a film like &#8220;The Simpsons Movie&#8221;.<br \/>\nAnd while I don&#8217;t think <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/idolchatter\/2008\/01\/-no-jack-nicholson-no.html\">Oscar has exactly grown-up<\/a>, I do think the Oscars are like your typical narcissistic teenager.  The Oscar voters want all the other cool kids in Hollywood to think they&#8217;re cool, too, so they nominate the &#8220;important&#8221; films, regardless of quality, just so they other cool kids will hang out with them and they can be cool together.<br \/>\nHowever, just like a teenager, the Oscar voters occasionally do the right thing.
