Thanksgiving Day TV was filled with marathons. The western marathons. The \u201cCold Case\u201d marathon. The Alfred Hitchcock marathon. Football marathon. \u201cCharmed\u201d marathon. \u201cThe Fresh Prince of Bel-Air\u201d marathon.
\nWhile marathons may be really fun traditions, they don\u2019t say much about the actual reason for the day itself. That\u2019s why I was so happy to see (and share with my family) the gratitude moments that the NFL provided during its games.
\nOne example came from Gwendolyn Jennings, mother of wide receiver Mark Jennings of the Green Bay Packers. \u201cWe celebrate at our home in Kalamazoo, Michigan,\u201d she said, \u201cWe sit around the table just have a good time thanking God for the things he\u2019s done for us, things that we would be thankful for\u2026for family, and just being together.
\n\u201cFamily is important,\u201d she continued, \u201cit\u2019s our lifeline.\u201d
\nSomewhere between the eating, the drinking and the shopping, the root of Thanksgiving is to take time to be thankful. That means knowing what we\u2019re thankful for and identifying who we\u2019re thankful to. Mrs. Jennings\u2014as well as several other families of players\u2014provided wonderful reflections that returned all of us in the audience to the real reason for the holiday. They weren\u2019t overly religious. They weren\u2019t overly preachy.
\nThey were just honest acknowledgments of faith-based thanksgiving that made it onto network TV in a really nice way. We need more of that, not just on the one holiday weekend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
