\nFor some, Thanksgiving and Christmas are times to celebrate much that is sacred about our lives and culture. For some it\u2019s a time that shows more than others that our culture is splitting apart in terms of what we believe about faith and its role in our society. For some it\u2019s just about shopping. And for some (I say this empathetically), it\u2019s a lonely time.
\nOne thing that most of can agree on, though, is that this season is truly The Most Wonderful Time of the Year when it comes to movies. From holiday flicks to Oscar contenders to star vehicles to merchandising marvels, there is just a dang lot of choices!
\nThis week alone, there are 15 new motion picture releases around the country. \u201cEleven Men Out,\u201d \u201cLove in the Time of Cholera,\u201d \u201cBeowulf,\u201d \u201cMr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium,\u201d \u201cLooking for Cheyenne,\u201d \u201cMargot at the Wedding\u201d and \u201cRedacted\u201d are all out today. On Wednesday, more are on the way with \u201cEnchanted, \u201c \u201cThis Christmas,\u201d \u201cThe Mist,\u201d \u201cHitman,\u201d \u201cAugust Rush,\u201d \u201cI’m Not There, \u201cChristmas in Wonderland\u201d and \u201cNina’s Heavenly Delights.\u201d
\nAdd these to what\u2019s just came out (Vince Vaughn\u2019s \u201cFred Claus,\u201d Tommy Lee Jones in \u201cNo Country For Old Men\u201d and \u201cLions for Lambs\u201d with Redford\/Streep\/Cruise) and you\u2019ve really got a veritable cornucopia to choose from.
\nCome December, highlights will include \u201cThe Diving Bell and the Butterfly,\u201d \u201cJuno,\u201d \u201cThe Golden Compass,\u201d \u201cAtonement,\u201d \u201cGrace is Gone,\u201d \u201cI Am Legend,\u201d \u201cThe Kite Runner,\u201d \u201cYouth Without Youth,\u201d \u201cNational Treasure II,\u201d and then the Christmas tripleheader: “Charlie Wilson\u2019s War” (Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts), “The Bucket List” (Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson) and “The Great Debaters” (Denzel Washington and some inspiring kids!) \nI encourage everyone to make time to do movies with those we love, especially if sharing the common experience helps us through a difficult time in a marriage, relationship or friendship.
