\nFor instance, \u201cHollywood Takes On the Ten Commandments\u201d read the Yahoo headline<\/a>. \u201cFilm producers take action with Oct. 19 animated release starring Ben Kingsley, Elliott Gould, Christian Slater.\u201d
\nFox News reported on the controversy of Radio Disney <\/a>wanting the word \u201cGod\u201d pulled from the advertisements surrounding the movie\u2019s release.
\nThe Hollywood Reporter noted that the company, Promenade Pictures, is founded by Frank Yablans, the former head of Paramount and MGM\/UA, associated with such films as \u201cThe Godfather,\u201d \u201cChinatown,\u201d \u201cSilver Streak,\u201d \u201cNorth Dallas Forty,\u201d and some Bond films.
\nAs a Beliefnet blogger, I had the advantage of seeing the movie early. I wanted to see it because it was made on a small budget, which was by design. \u201cOur company believes that outstanding family entertainment can be made for a fraction of that Pixar and other high-profile animated movies are made for,\u201d said Ron Booth, one of the co-producers. \u201cFor investors and for families, everybody wins when we can make more movies for less money\u2014maintaining high quality\u2014so that family fare makes a greater dent on the cinema landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n


\n\u201cThe Ten Commandments\u201d looks good, and it sounds even better. In fact, I think the soundtrack is worthy of Oscar consideration. Booth was a bit shy about that:
\n\u201cOur main goal wasn\u2019t as much to win Oscars, or spoil the cast with lavish hospitality, or spend unnecessary dollars on typical Hollywood costs,\u201d he continued, \u201cbut we\u2019re focused on one thing: bringing the best family entertainment possible to the scores of moms and dads who want great stuff for their kids, and great stuff that they can watch together with their kids.\u201d
\n\u201cLots of are targeted just for kids, or just for teens, or just for adults,\u201d said Booth. \u201cWe want to bring families together, and we really believe its possible. People who see this movie will be pleased, and its only our first of many.\u201d
\nBooth was referring to the \u201cEpic Tales From the Bible Series<\/a>\u201d which will feature future movies along the same lines. \u201cWe\u2019re not a \u2018biblical\u2019 studio as much as we\u2019re committed to \u2018family\u2019 movies, and the Bible has long been a great source for some of the richest stories in our culture\u2026stories that too many young people may not get the chance to be exposed to.\u201d
\nPerhaps Booth and his team are right. A recent story in The Free Republic <\/a>reported that \u201cmore Americans know Big Mac ingredients than the ten commandments.\u201d If that\u2019s the case, I hope this movie does even more than entertain: I hope it informs as well as it inspires.
