In short, he and some buddies believed they should give their lives to reach one of the most brutal groups the world had ever known. After he and his friends were speared to death, two of the widows\u2014and their children\u2014followed in their footsteps, including Jim\u2019s wife Elizabeth.<\/p>\n<p>What makes the story powerful is the spirituality of a man who said, \u201cHe is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.\u201d  It is a kind of spirituality that we should talk about more.<\/p>\n<p>In our current culture, most spirituality is about \u201cwhat works for me.\u201d What makes me feel good? What makes me feel better? What helps me solve my problems? What gives me strength against my challenges? What is an entertaining way to engage in spirituality? What gives me a natural high? What did I get out of the book, show, movie, text, song, poem, etc.?<\/p>\n<p>The musician <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottwesleybrown.com\/\" target=\"_New\">Scott Wesley Brown<\/a>, who was one of the millions who\u2019ve had their lives transformed by the Elliots\u2019 sacrifice, attempted to capture Jim\u2019s sacrificial walk when he wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I&#8217;ve lost track of all the Sundays<br \/>The offering plates gone by<br \/>And as I gave my hard earned dollars<br \/>I felt free to keep my life.<br \/>I talk about commitment<br \/>And the need to count the cost<br \/>But the words of a martyr show me<br \/>I don&#8217;t really know His cross.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jim\u2019s decision to go\u2014and his wife\u2019s decision to follow in his footsteps\u2014was about a kind of spirituality that wasn\u2019t saying \u201cwhat\u2019s in it for me?\u201d It was about saying, \u201cWhat, God, do you want me to do?\u201d And, &#8220;please give me the strength and courage to do it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;End of the Spear&#8221; is worth watching, if only to direct our reflections about whether our spiritual journey is truly about discovering God, or if it\u2019s more like a trip to the mall&#8230; looking for something that makes us feel good at a bargain price.<\/p>\n<div style=\"clear:both;padding-bottom:0.25em\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cEnd of the Spear\u201d is the story of how Jim Elliot followed the spiritual promptings within him &#8211;and set in motion an unexpected series of events.
