{"id":6024,"date":"2019-06-14T16:42:46","date_gmt":"2019-06-14T16:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/howgreatthoupart\/?p=6024"},"modified":"2019-06-14T16:42:46","modified_gmt":"2019-06-14T16:42:46","slug":"son-said-divorce-shocked","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/howgreatthoupart\/2019\/06\/son-said-divorce-shocked.html","title":{"rendered":"What My Son Said About Divorce That Shocked Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The dust is settling from our recent move.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Things are good.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/howgreatthoupart\/files\/2019\/06\/IMG_8044.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6026 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/374\/2019\/06\/IMG_8044-277x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_8044\" width=\"277\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><em>However, it is difficult to protect children from financial abuse.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I would compare it to alcoholism. Try as you may the kids will see that parent abuse alcohol. It&#8217;s pervasive. They witness it. The other parent doesn&#8217;t have to talk about it for it to be their reality.<\/p>\n<p>The same is true for financial abuse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It lives in their world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>It does not need to be talked about to be seen.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>My sons are truly caring and empathetic people. In many ways, what has happened has only deepened that. Still, I was not prepared for these words.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;This happened to you because you stayed home with us,&#8221; my son says.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I am caught off guard.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;No,&#8221; I say. &#8220;Women stay home every day and this does not happen to them. Women get divorced every day and this does not happen to them. Did I make myself financially vulnerable? Yes.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I pause for a moment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shocked by the post-divorce clarity which now captures me.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;This happened to me because I gave my power away. No person should have the power in a relationship but no person should be powerless either,&#8221; I say.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>I do not want my children to associate a mother who works &#8216;inside the home&#8217; instead of &#8216;outside of it &#8216;as compromised.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The years I raised my children were the best in my life.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is an intensely personal decision.<\/p>\n<p><em>It is based on life experiences. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>For me, a mom who got sick when I was just twenty-four and lost when I was just twenty-eight. It is based on finances. For us, we needed to either hire someone to replace me in our business or someone to take care of our children. I had the luxury of making the choice. Many do not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The once raw and limping woman initially wanted to blame this on my ex-husband.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>And that would be true, a great injustice has been done &#8211;\u00a0 to me and to my children.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>But that would make me a victim and it would leave a wave of anger which would never wash away.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The marketer in me had to take a step back and assess the heart-aching reality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>While many elements were at play&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Walking away from a profession<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Half-way through the marriage handing over control of the finances<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Never questioning or looking at those finances again based on trust<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Staying too long in a bad situation<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Trying to beg a person to save a relationship they did not feel worth saving.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>It was my personality and my choices which led me to become increasingly powerless.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How?<\/p>\n<p>When I paid the house and business bills the first half of our marriage I was present. It was my life and I was one hundred percent involved in it. Yes, I was at home raising my children but I was not in the dark about any aspect of my life.<\/p>\n<p><strong> I self-protected. I had boundaries.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I not only turned over the bills but never looked at them or the business income or account again &#8211; I gave away a bit of my power. I was too trusting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I failed to self-protect. I failed to have boundaries.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I continually tried to rescue my spouse and stayed so long that a once healthy environment turned unhealthy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I failed to self-protect. I failed to have boundaries.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I stayed so long things got out of control.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I failed to self-protect.
