{"id":185,"date":"2010-05-04T07:12:42","date_gmt":"2010-05-04T07:12:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/homeshuling\/2010\/05\/stamp-out-hunger.html"},"modified":"2010-05-04T07:12:42","modified_gmt":"2010-05-04T07:12:42","slug":"stamp-out-hunger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/homeshuling\/2010\/05\/stamp-out-hunger.html","title":{"rendered":"Stamp Out Hunger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last night at dinner, Ella, my six year old, asked &#8220;Do grown ups ever lie?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Yes,&#8221; I said. &#8220;There are grown ups who do all kinds of bad things.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Do they steal?&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Sometimes,&#8221; I answered. &#8220;But it&#8217;s wrong.&#8221;<br \/>\nZoe, newly 5, piped in. &#8220;Well, sometimes it&#8217;s not wrong to steal.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;When is that?&#8221; I asked.<br \/>\n&#8220;If you&#8217;re poor, and you don&#8217;t have any money, then it&#8217;s ok to steal.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Is that true, Mama?&#8221; asked Ella, who prefers her lines neatly drawn, whether on coloring pages or ethical debates.<br \/>\n&#8220;I don&#8217;t know,&#8221; I said. &#8220;I don&#8217;t really know the answer to that question.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Papa?&#8221; she implored.<br \/>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s never <em>right<\/em> to steal,&#8221; answered Keith. &#8220;But sometimes, if your kids are hungry and you don&#8217;t have any food, you might have to do it anyway.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;So they aren&#8217;t bad, right?&#8221; persisted Zoe.<br \/>\nNone of us knew quite what to say.<br \/>\nCoincidentally, right after dinner, we set out on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xtracycle.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Extracycle<\/a> to distribute bags for the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.helpstampouthunger.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stamp Out Hunger<\/a> food drive. I pedaled us around the neighborhood, while they ran up to each doorstep leaving a bright orange bag with a list of foods most needed by our local food pantry. This is an <a href=\"http:\/\/homeshuling.wordpress.com\/2009\/05\/03\/a-shabbat-stroll-with-a-purpose\/\" target=\"_blank\">annual tradition<\/a> for us, and one they really look forward to.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/homeshuling.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/05\/stamp-out-hunger1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1321\" src=\"https:\/\/homeshuling.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/05\/stamp-out-hunger1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nOn the bike, I thought to say to my kids &#8220;We do this to make sure no one ever has to make a hard decision like whether to steal or feed their children. &#8221;<br \/>\nFrom my mouth to God&#8217;s ears.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last night at dinner, Ella, my six year old, asked &#8220;Do grown ups ever lie?&#8221;
