She was none too thrilled by this information. \u00a0&#8220;We don&#8217;t really do <em>anything<\/em> Jewish for Hanukkah,&#8221; she cried. &#8220;All we do is light some stupid candles.&#8221; Mind you, this is the same child who sat with her fingers plugging her ears at Bnai Jershurun this past Friday night because she was so mad that I had made her go to shul on our vacation in NYC. Nevertheless, I didn&#8217;t want to dismiss her criticism too quickly. Was lighting (stupid) candles in fact the only Jewish thing we did for Hanukkah? Have I been so busy teaching and blogging that I&#8217;ve neglected my responsibility as a Jewish parent?<\/p>\n<p>Actually? No.<\/p>\n<p>For you, Zoe, a few highlights of our Jew-y Hanukkah:<\/p>\n<p>We decorated our windows, in order to fulfill the mitzvah of <em>pirumei nissa<\/em>, aka publicizing the miracle of Hanukkah.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/homeshuling\/files\/2011\/12\/Hanukkah-decorations.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1810\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/86\/2011\/12\/Hanukkah-decorations-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We made latkes, topped with applesauce and sour cream. (Though I didn&#8217;t photograph ours, so I borrowed this shot from the public domain.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/86\/2011\/12\/latkes.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1805\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/86\/2011\/12\/latkes.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We baked Hanukkah shaped sugar cookies. (Yes, these misshapen goodies are ours.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/homeshuling\/files\/2011\/12\/Hanukkah-Cookies.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1806\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/86\/2011\/12\/Hanukkah-Cookies-300x269.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"269\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We read Hanukkah Books, including one of my favorite out-of-print classics, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.malkadrucker.com\/latkes.html\">Grandma&#8217;s Latkes<\/a><\/em>, by Malka Drucker, and tare currently working our way through the less-engaging but highly-informative <em><a href=\"http:\/\/us.macmillan.com\/alexandrasscroll\/MiriamChaikin\" target=\"_blank\">Alexandra&#8217;s Scroll<\/a><\/em>, by Miriam Chakin.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/homeshuling\/files\/2011\/12\/Grandmas-Latkes.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1808\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/homeshuling\/files\/2011\/12\/Grandmas-Latkes.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/homeshuling\/files\/2011\/12\/alexandras-scroll.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1807\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/86\/2011\/12\/alexandras-scroll-233x300.jpg\" width=\"233\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We took a family trip to NYC, which included the Jewiest of all activities (from a cultural perspective, that is) lunch on Christmas Day in Chinatown. (This was followed by a visit to the to eat pickles from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pickleguys.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Pickle Guys<\/a> on Essex St. on the Lower East Side.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/homeshuling\/files\/2011\/12\/ella-chinese.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1809\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/86\/2011\/12\/ella-chinese-224x300.jpg\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We also sang Hanukkah songs, attended a community Hanukkah celebration, and made a real, oil burning menorah:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/homeshuling\/files\/2011\/12\/Photo-209.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1811\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/86\/2011\/12\/Photo-209-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tonight we are making an edible, but kosher (as in halachic, or legal &#8211; at least I think it will be) menorah made out of cupcakes. Here they are pre-frosting and pre-candles. We&#8217;re going to cut the top off one cupcake to make the shamash a little lower than the others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/homeshuling\/files\/2011\/12\/cupcakes.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1814\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/86\/2011\/12\/cupcakes-300x225.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/homeshuling\/files\/2011\/12\/cupcakes1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1817\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/86\/2011\/12\/cupcakes1-300x279.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"279\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, yeah, we did watch Miracle on 34th St and went to see the Eloise Tree at the Plaza hotel, and no, we didn&#8217;t play dreidl, but I&#8217;d still wager that our Hanukkah was Jew-ier than average.
