{"id":1310,"date":"2011-06-06T19:46:14","date_gmt":"2011-06-06T23:46:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/homeshuling\/?p=1310"},"modified":"2011-07-08T08:51:47","modified_gmt":"2011-07-08T12:51:47","slug":"our-shavuot-sleepover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/homeshuling\/2011\/06\/our-shavuot-sleepover.html","title":{"rendered":"Our shavuot sleepover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My friend Alicia Jo Rabins, of <a href=\"http:\/\/jdubrecords.org\/artists.php?id=32\" target=\"_blank\">Girls in Trouble<\/a> fame (but more importantly to me, from &#8220;played fiddle at my wedding&#8221; fame) was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tabletmag.com\/podcasts\/68853\/all-night-long\/\" target=\"_blank\">interviewed<\/a> on Tablet about the tradition of the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.myjewishlearning.com\/holidays\/Jewish_Holidays\/Shavuot\/In_the_Community\/Nighttime_Learning.shtml\" target=\"_blank\"> Tikkun Leil Shavuot<\/a>, staying up all night to study Torah on the first night of Shavuot. She likens the practice to the near ecstacy of a sleepover party &#8211; young girls giddy from staying up together way past their bedtimes.<\/p>\n<p>Her interview helped me reframe the Shavuot celebration I am planning. Because their school is closed, and my husband&#8217;s public high school is not, I&#8217;m swooping the girls off to the Cape for the holiday. I had planned to read Zoe&#8217;s &#8220;torah&#8221; that she will bring home from Gan tomorrow, and make blintzes. But I want this night to be extra special &#8211; to really help commemorate the awesomeness of revelation. Although I participated in quite a few all night study sessions before I had children, I actually hadn&#8217;t considered intentionally staying up extra late with the girls. But thanks to Alicia, we will be up until <em>at least<\/em> ten. Will it be mystical? I don&#8217;t know.
