{"id":2649,"date":"2011-12-12T00:00:35","date_gmt":"2011-12-12T05:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/haveamagnificentday\/?p=2649"},"modified":"2011-12-12T00:41:40","modified_gmt":"2011-12-12T05:41:40","slug":"the-cab-ride","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/haveamagnificentday\/2011\/12\/the-cab-ride.html","title":{"rendered":"The Cab Ride"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/haveamagnificentday\/files\/2011\/12\/ny_cab_grand_central.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2650\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/85\/2011\/12\/ny_cab_grand_central-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #000080\">from a friend&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"color: #000080\">I arrived at the address and honked the horn. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\"> After waiting a few minutes I walked to the door and knocked.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">&#8216;Just a minute&#8217;, answered a frail, elderly voice. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">I could hear something being dragged across the floor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"> After a long pause, the door opened.\u00a0 <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">A small woman in her 90&#8217;s stood before me.\u00a0 <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">She was wearing a print dress and a pillbox hat with a veil pinned on it, like somebody out of a 1940&#8217;s movie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"> By her side was a small nylon suitcase. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">The apartment looked as if no one had lived in it for years. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">All the furniture was covered with sheets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"> There were no locks on the walls, no knickknacks or utensils on the counters. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">In the corner was a cardboard box filled with photos and glassware.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"> &#8216;Would you carry my bag out to the car?&#8217; she said. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">I took the suitcase to the cab, then returned to assist the woman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"> She took my arm and we walked slowly toward the curb.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\"> She kept thanking me for my kindness. &#8216;It&#8217;s nothing&#8217;, I told her. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">&#8216;I just try to treat my passengers the way I would want my mother to be treated.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"> &#8216;Oh, you&#8217;re such a good boy, she said. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">When we got in the cab, she gave me an address and then asked, &#8216;Could you drive through downtown?&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"> &#8216;It&#8217;s not the shortest way,&#8217; I answered quickly.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\"> &#8216;Oh, I don&#8217;t mind,&#8217; she said.\u00a0 <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">&#8216;I&#8217;m in no hurry. I&#8217;m on my way to a hospice.\u00a0&#8216;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"> I looked in the rear-view mirror.\u00a0 <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">Her eyes were glistening. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">&#8216;I don&#8217;t have any family left,&#8217; she continued in a soft voice..<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">The doctor says I don&#8217;t have very long.&#8217; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">I quietly reached over and shut off the meter.<br \/>\n&#8216;What route would you like me to take?&#8217; I asked.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"> For the next two hours, we drove through the city. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">She showed me the building where she had once worked as an elevator operator.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\"> We drove through the neighborhood where she and her husband had lived when they were newlyweds. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\">She had me pull up in front of a furniture warehouse that had once been a ballroom where she had gone dancing as a girl. Sometimes she&#8217;d ask me to slow in front of a particular building or corner and would sit staring into the darkness, saying <\/span><span style=\"color: #000080\">nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"> As the first hint of sun was creasing the horizon, she suddenly said, &#8216;I&#8217;m tired. Let&#8217;s go now&#8217;.<br \/>\nWe drove in silence to the address she had given me. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">It was a low building, like a small convalescent home, with a driveway that passed under a portico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"> Two orderlies came out to the cab as soon as we pulled up. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">They were solicitous and intent, watching her every move. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\"> They must have been expecting her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"> I opened the trunk and took the small suitcase to the door. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">The woman was already seated in a wheelchair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"> &#8216;How much do I owe you?&#8217;\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000080\">She asked, reaching into her purse.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\"> &#8216;Nothing,&#8217; I said<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\"> You have to make a living,&#8217; she answered.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\"> &#8216;There are other passengers,&#8217; I responded.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\"><br \/>\nAlmost without thinking, I bent and gave her a hug.\u00a0 <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">She held onto me tightly.<br \/>\n&#8216;You gave an old woman a little moment of joy,&#8217; she said.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\"> &#8216;Thank you.&#8217;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"> I squeezed her hand, and then walked into the dim morning light.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">Behind me, a door shut. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">It was the sound of the closing of a life..<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"> I didn&#8217;t pick up any more passengers that shift. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">I drove aimlessly lost in thought.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">For the rest of that day, I could hardly talk. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\">What if that woman had gotten an angry driver, or one who was impatient to end his shift?<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\"> What if I had refused to take the run,\u00a0 or had honked once, then driven away?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"> On a quick review,\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think that I have done anything more important in my life.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\"> We&#8217;re conditioned to think that our lives revolve around great moments.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #000080\"> But great moments often catch us unaware-beautifully wrapped in what others may consider a small one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>PEOPLE MAY NOT REMEMBER EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID, OR WHAT YOU SAID ~BUT THEY WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"color: #000080\">blessings,<br \/>\n\ud83d\ude42 Lee<br \/>\n<em>The Mega Coach<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/85\/2011\/12\/Practice-Random-Kindness.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2651\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/85\/2011\/12\/Practice-Random-Kindness.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"283\" height=\"329\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from a friend&#8230;.
