\nTwo men, both seriously ill, occupied the same<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>hospital room.\u00a0 One man was allowed to sit up<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the fluid from his lungs.\u00a0 His bed was next to the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>room’s only window.\u00a0 The other man had to spend<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>all his time flat on his back.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The men talked for hours on end.\u00a0 They spoke of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>their wives and families, their homes, their<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>jobs, their involvement in the military service,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>where they had been on vacation.\u00a0 <\/span>Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>window could sit up, he would pass the time by<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>describing to his roommate all the things he could<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>see outside the window.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>The man in the other bed began to live for<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>those one-hour periods where his world would be<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>broadened and enlivened by all the activity and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>color of the world outside.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The window overlooked a park with a lovely<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>lake.\u00a0 Ducks and swans played on the water while<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>children sailed their model boats.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>every colour and a fine view of the city skyline<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>could be seen in the distance.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As the man by the window described all this in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>exquisite detail, the man on the other side of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the room would close his eyes and imagine the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>picturesque scene.\u00a0 <\/span>One warm afternoon the man by the window <\/span>described a parade passing by.\u00a0 Although the other<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>man couldn’t hear the band — he could see it.\u00a0 In his<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>it with descriptive words.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Days and weeks passed.\u00a0 One morning, the day<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>find the lifeless body of the man by the window,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>who had died peacefully in his sleep.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>She was saddened and called the hospital attendants<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to take the body away.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>man asked if he could be moved next to the window.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>making sure he was comfortable, she left him<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>alone.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>one elbow to take his first look at the real world<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>outside.\u00a0 He strained to slowly turn to look out the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>window beside the bed.\u00a0 It faced a blank wall.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>his deceased roommate who had described such<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>wonderful things outside this window. The nurse<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>responded that the man was blind and could not even<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>see the wall. She said, “Perhaps he just wanted to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>encourage you.”<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Epilogue<\/span><\/strong>: There is tremendous happiness in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>making others happy, despite our own situations.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>when shared, is doubled.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>If you want to feel rich, just count all the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>things you have that money can’t buy.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>The origin of this letter is unknown.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Just forward it to your friends to whom you<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>wish good luck.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>feel…<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
