{"id":1251,"date":"2011-07-21T00:35:42","date_gmt":"2011-07-21T04:35:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/haveamagnificentday\/?p=1251"},"modified":"2011-07-21T00:35:42","modified_gmt":"2011-07-21T04:35:42","slug":"do-whats-most-important","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/haveamagnificentday\/2011\/07\/do-whats-most-important.html","title":{"rendered":"Do What&#8217;s Most Important"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1252\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1252\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/haveamagnificentday\/files\/2011\/07\/playful-pandas-pictures.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1252\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/85\/2011\/07\/playful-pandas-pictures-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1252\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Playful Pandas Having Fun<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the coffee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">A college professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.<br \/>\nWhen the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large, empty mayonnaise jar<br \/>\nand proceeded to fill it with golf balls.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">He then asked the students if the jar was full.\u00a0 They agreed that it was.<br \/>\nSo the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar.<br \/>\nHe shook the jar lightly.\u00a0 The pebble rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">He then asked the students again if the jar was full.\u00a0 They agreed it was full.<br \/>\nThe professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.<br \/>\nOf course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">The students responded with a unanimous &#8220;yes!&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured<br \/>\nthe entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand.<br \/>\nThe students laughed.\u00a0 &#8220;Now,&#8221; said the professor, as the laughter subsided, &#8220;I want you<br \/>\nto recognize that this jar represents your life. \u00a0The &#8220;golf balls&#8221; are the important things &#8212;<br \/>\nyour family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions &#8212;<br \/>\nThings that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">&#8220;The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, your car&#8230;.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">The sand is everything else &#8212; the small stuff.&#8221; If you put the sand into the jar first,&#8221;<br \/>\nhe continued, &#8220;there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.<br \/>\nThe same goes for life.\u00a0 If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff,<br \/>\nyou will never have room for the things that are important to you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">&#8220;Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">Play with your children.<br \/>\nTake time to have medical checkups.<br \/>\nTake your partner out to dinner.<br \/>\nHave fun &#8211; Go to the beach or play another 18 holes.<br \/>\nThere will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">Take care of the &#8220;golf balls&#8221; first &#8212; the things and people that really matter.<br \/>\nSet your priorities.<br \/>\nThe rest is just sand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.<br \/>\nThe professor smiled. &#8220;I&#8217;m glad you asked,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n&#8220;It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem,<br \/>\nthere&#8217;s always room for a cup of coffee with a friend!!!&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\">smiles,<br \/>\n\ud83d\ude42 Lee<br \/>\n<em>The Mega Coach<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;font-family: Verdana;font-size: x-small\"><em><\/em><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the coffee.
