{"id":2596,"date":"2013-11-23T15:26:32","date_gmt":"2013-11-23T20:26:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/godonomics\/?p=2596"},"modified":"2013-10-30T20:53:17","modified_gmt":"2013-10-31T00:53:17","slug":"loving-your-job-using-time-wisely","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/godonomics\/2013\/11\/loving-your-job-using-time-wisely.html","title":{"rendered":"Loving Your Job:  Using Time Wisely"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is an insidious tool that our world uses to keep us from becoming a disciple of Christ. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It creates the illusion of progress and commitment without actually making progress. \u00a0It creates a sense of \u201cenergy and accomplishment\u201d without having any real accomplishment. \u00a0\u00a0It affects our marriages, our parenting, our careers, and our faith. \u00a0It sounds like this:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I am planning on starting a read through the Bible plan to cover the whole Bible&#8230; \u00a0\u00a0Later.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I am planning on a monthly date night with my spouse&#8230; We\u2019ll start it Later this year.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I am planning on a new work out and diet where I lose 20 pounds&#8230; I haven\u2019t started yet, but I will get to it soon.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">I heard a message about memorizing Scripture and I want to take my top three weaknesses and arm myself with specific Scriptures about&#8230; I haven\u2019t got to it yet, but I will later.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Isn\u2019t that true. I see that in myself. I set goals for myself and the idea of setting the goal makes me feel like I\u2019ve done something&#8230; And I have, but it tricks me into thinking I\u2019ve done something about that goal. \u00a0\u00a0I had a goal last semester to take my son and daughter out on a date once a month. The goal looked great, but Christmas came and I hadn\u2019t actually done it. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I had a goal of going into my kids room at night once a week before bedtime to check in with them on how they are doing. \u00a0It was a great goal&#8230; but I was going to put it in practice next week. Soon 3 months went by. \u00a0I had plans for going into the birds and bees talk with my son, stage 2.0, last semester, we got two chapters in, and I put it off to LATER. \u00a0 The Bible offers a lens to think about our time.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #00ff00\"><strong>Cater to Something Greater<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #00ff00\"><strong>By Rejecting Sooner or Later<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>God calls his disciples and followers to Cater to Something GReater. \u00a0And doing that, will require us to reject the lie that says, \u201cSooner or Later, I\u2019ll get to it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Paul begins in Ephesians chapter 5:15<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">I. Cater to Something Greater&#8230;by Walking Wisely<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Eph 5:15-21 \u00a015 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Catering to something greater begins as we stop walking as fools. \u00a0We begin to walk wisely. We redeem the time by walking circumspectly. \u00a0Walking circumspectly means to \u201cnotice in advance,\u201d and \u201cSee dangers before they occur\u201d and Watch Out where you put your feet. \u00a0\u00a0Not as fools. \u00a0How do we know if we are walking wisely, vs like fools.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Photo: Chad's new book, hot off the presses\" src=\"https:\/\/fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net\/hphotos-ak-prn1\/p480x480\/541424_10200406752643179_1926589621_n.jpg\" width=\"336\" height=\"518\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u00a0LAst Sunday was an exciting day for me. \u00a0Over the last three years, I have tried to invest time and redeem time, by writing a book. \u00a0 I&#8217;ve made small deposits of time over the past three years to this project. \u00a0In comes out in July, but\u00a0we&#8217;ll\u00a0let you know some ways you can order it and use it in advance in the next month. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0I bring this up for two reasons: \u00a0First, it was SOOOO exciting to go to my box last Sunday and Random House sent me my first copy of Horizon\u2019s first book. \u00a0I walked into the tech \u00a0booth and a volunteer \u00a0took a picture of it and posted it on FB. Here it is. \u00a0As I think back, one of the verses that motivated me to write this was this verse in Ephesians. \u00a0How do we redeem the time and speak to the culture we are in. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The second part of the verse that struck me was the part about \u201cnot as fools\u201d In godonomics, I address\u00a0a lot\u00a0of what the Proverbs say about foolishness.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">1. Fools \u00a0spend all they have \u00a0Pr 21:20<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">2. Fools don\u2019t take feedback \u00a0Pr 15:5, 23:9<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">3. Fools don\u2019t see danger coming \u00a0Pr 22:3<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">4. Fools thinking saying whatever they think is healthy. \u00a0\u00a0Pr 29:20<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">5. Fools don\u2019t listen Prov 18:13<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">6. Fools don\u2019t learn their lesson, repeat their mistakes Pr 26:11<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">7. Fools Gossip Prov 26:17<\/p>\n<p><b><b>8.
