{"id":2446,"date":"2013-01-23T05:48:52","date_gmt":"2013-01-23T10:48:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/godonomics\/?p=2446"},"modified":"2012-11-11T14:16:00","modified_gmt":"2012-11-11T19:16:00","slug":"generosity-to-strangers-muslims-christians-and-jews-oh-my","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/godonomics\/2013\/01\/generosity-to-strangers-muslims-christians-and-jews-oh-my.html","title":{"rendered":"Generosity to Strangers: Muslims, Christians, and Jews, OH My."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2452\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/201\/2012\/11\/bed6-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/>While in Israel, my wife and I visited a Bedouin\u00a0village. \u00a0This Muslim family lives in Israel and their 15 year old is proudly training for the Israeli army. \u00a0 I was shocked that Muslims served in the Israeli army. \u00a0Perhaps I shouldn&#8217;t be shocked, but I assumed as an American watching the news that<\/p>\n<p>Muslims and Jewish people all hated each other. \u00a0 I was pleasantly surprised at the cooperation and common love for the freedom of Israel shared by this Muslim family.<\/p>\n<p>Our tour guy, Ray Vanderlaan, and another tour guide, who serves in the ISraeli army spoke about the untold story of the cooperation in Israel of people of differing faiths and their common love for the free nation of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Further this family spoke of the freedom the government of Israeli had brought to their family.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/godonomics\/files\/2012\/11\/bed1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2447\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/201\/2012\/11\/bed1-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a>They had experienced liberty, prosperity, and generosity from others. \u00a0 They were still poor by Americans standards, but loved the opportunity to serve others: even Christians Americans. \u00a0It was an honor for them to give what little they had. \u00a0In fact, my wife and I sat with 58 others as this Muslim family served us what little food and honey tea they had joyfully. \u00a0 One of the teen girls had the honor of preparing our food before us. IN contrast to American customs of &#8220;hiding the preparation&#8221; for meals, they prepared, cooked, mixed, and made the food right before us. \u00a0 To the right is the fire they made to cook the pitas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/godonomics\/files\/2012\/11\/bed5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2451\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/201\/2012\/11\/bed5-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The children had never seen a magician or juggler. I was able to share my gifts with them as they laughed and continued to ask me to &#8220;do it again&#8221; in sign language. \u00a0 We loved the opportunity to be generous and to receive generosity despite our cultural and religious differences.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2449\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/201\/2012\/11\/bed3-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>The cooked the pita before us and poured us tea with honey. \u00a0 The tea was delicious.
