{"id":2414,"date":"2013-07-30T05:39:28","date_gmt":"2013-07-30T09:39:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/godonomics\/?p=2414"},"modified":"2013-07-16T11:01:27","modified_gmt":"2013-07-16T15:01:27","slug":"are-we-making-enough-money-to-be-generous","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/godonomics\/2013\/07\/are-we-making-enough-money-to-be-generous.html","title":{"rendered":"Are we making enough money to be generous?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we continued our journey in Israel, my wife and I were struck by the huge commercial centers all over the ancient land. \u00a0Here is a photo of another city in the Promised Land. \u00a0 God has asked his people to participate in commerce by becoming productive in the new land. \u00a0 \u00a0 As you made money in the new land, you were to depend on God, watch your expenses and give a percentage of your money to the poor. \u00a0 \u00a0Many temples found in the Promised Land were filled with pig bones. \u00a0 Since pigs were part of the<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/godonomics\/files\/2012\/11\/pigbones1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2415 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/201\/2012\/11\/pigbones1-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Egyptian worship God called his people out of, they were considered unclean. \u00a0 Yet, \u00a0over and over in the ruins of the temples, we find pig bones. \u00a0A sign that God&#8217;s people had rebelled against God and started to worship other gods. The result was &#8220;pig bones&#8221; in the temples, and a lack of generosity to others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/godonomics\/files\/2012\/11\/standing1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2416\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/201\/2012\/11\/standing1-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">In fact, when God set up most of these successful cities, they were positioned at the crossroads of major intercontinental roads as a beacon of hope. \u00a0 Often through the Bible, when God&#8217;s people made a commitment to follow His way. To be successful so they could bless others, they would stand stones on end. These &#8220;standing stones&#8221; were a visual reminder of a commitment to give to others. \u00a0 We saw many of these standing stones. \u00a0 These are the types of stones that were taken out of the Jordan river when Joshua crossed to mark the moment. \u00a0They were also a living witness so that our children and grandchildren would ask us, &#8220;What does this mean?&#8221; \u00a0We could answer, &#8220;God called us to be successful and make money to provide for ourselves and help the poor and needy.&#8221; \u00a0 \u00a0 I wondered if my standing stones are testifying to my family as strongly as these did?
