In the recent flurry of Christian right endorsements of top-tier GOP candidates, the former Tennessee senator has conspicuously come up empty handed.<br \/>\nFor a candidate who pitches himself as the only \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fred08.com\/index.aspx\">consistent conservative<\/a>\u201d\u2014and who some tout as a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/godometer\/2007\/09\/chicken-fried-reagan-crackling.html\">southern-fried Reagan<\/a>\u201d\u2014that\u2019s got to be disappointing. If Thompson hopes to break through in Iowa, and especially in South Carolina, he\u2019ll need to establish some credibility among religious conservatives. While no guarantee of success, picking up a high-level endorsement\u2014as <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/godometer\/2007\/11\/robertson-backs-giuliani.html\">Rudy Giuliani<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/godometer\/2007\/11\/romney-scores-a-big-endorsemen.html\">Mitt Romney<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/godometer\/2007\/11\/mccain-wins-brownback-nod.html\">John McCain<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/godometer\/2007\/11\/huckabee-picks-up-an-endorseme.html\">Mike Huckabee <\/a>all have done this week\u2014would certainly help.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n4<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>God-o-Meter suspects that the mood is a tad glum over in the Thompson camp this week.
