A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/poll\/108688\/Religious-Intensity-Predicts-Support-McCain.aspx\">new Gallup poll analysis<\/a> shows that Americans who say faith is important to their lives&#8211;about two thirds of the country&#8211;favor McCain over Obama 50-percent to 40-percent.<br \/>\nAmong white Protestants who say religion is important in their daily lives&#8211;Gallup doesn&#8217;t say how much of the electorate this represents, but it&#8217;s a huge block&#8211;the Gap grows even wider: McCain enjoys a 36-point lead there.<br \/>\nThese are pretty stark stats, but it would be helpful to have some historical comparison. After all, the strongly religious have been the GOP&#8217;s base now for decades.
