McCain wrapped up his two-day spin through South Carolina with a town hall meeting at a Greer family restaurant.
\nJohn Grabiel, a Greer minister, pressed McCain about whether he considered Jesus Christ his personal savior, but McCain wouldn’t directly respond.
\n“I have deep religious beliefs and values,” McCain said. “I had experiences in my life where I had to rely on God to get me through not another day or another hour, but another minute.”
\nHe added that he attends North Phoenix Baptist Church and that his faith was between him and God.
\nGrabiel said afterward that McCain didn’t answer his question.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To God-o-Meter, McCain skipping an opportunity to connect with South Carolina evangelicals by declining to say Jesus is his savior (even the Mormon Mitt Romney has said as much<\/a>) is clear proof that McCain’s earlier statement about being a Baptist<\/a>–he’d previously called himself an Episcopalian–was not some concerted attempt to win over conservative Christians. Rather, it appears to have been an honest reflection on where McCain is on his faith journey.<\/p>\n
