Three months into a presidential campaign predicated largely on winning support from Southern evangelicals, Fred Thompson included a church visit on his official campaign schedule yesterday, according to a report from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/blogs\/2007\/12\/09\/politics\/fromtheroad\/entry3596208.shtml\">CBS News<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>MIAMI \u2013 In a move meant to solidify his conservative credentials among evangelicals and reach out to the Hispanic community, Fred Thompson made his first public visit to a church today.<br \/>\n\u201cI grew up in the Church of Christ in middle Tennessee, and my mother saw to it that I was in church three times a week,\u201d Thompson told the congregation of over 2000. \u201cShe would be very proud to see me here, but surprised that I\u2019m on this side of the pulpit.\u201d<br \/>\nShe wouldn\u2019t be the only one. Thompson said back in September he doesn\u2019t attend church regularly, but that didn\u2019t seem to bother the crowd at the sprawling mega-church Iglesia El Rey Jesus. Thompson admitted he \u201cdidn\u2019t always act the way I should\u201d during services when he was growing up, but his faith now shapes his political ideas.<br \/>\n\u201cOur rights don\u2019t come from any government, but from God,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is important that we acknowledge the importance of faith in this nation, and to this nation.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>CBS reported that the congregation gave Thompson a standing ovation on his way out.
