Even after he voiced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FjeyLcj69lU\">opposition to a Right to Life Amendment<\/a>, was revealed to have lobbied for an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mindfully.org\/Reform\/2007\/Fred-D-Thompson7jul07.htm\">abortion rights group<\/a>, and earned the ire of <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/wireStory?id=3627143\">influential Christian Right players<\/a>, Fred Thompson was endorsed by the National Right to Life Committee this morning. What God-o-Meter found most interesting about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrlc.org\/Election2008\/111307POTUSEndorsement.pdf\">Right to Life&#8217;s endorsement statement<\/a> is how much it focuses on Thompson&#8217;s chances against Rudy Giuliani:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Since announcing his candidacy in September, Fred Thompson has run second only to pro-abortion candidate Rudy Giuliani for the Republican nomination in the overwhelming majority of national polls. As pro-lifers throughout the nation begin to unite behind his candidacy, he will be well positioned to win the nomination and the presidency.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Though Thompson is clearly pro-life&#8211;the NRLC points out that he wants to overturn <em>Roe <\/em>and, as a U.S. Senator, opposed taxpayer-funded abortion and supported parental consent laws&#8211;God-o-Meter arched its eyebrows at this electability argument, given that Thompson is currently running <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2008\/president\/ia\/iowa_republican_caucus-207.html\">fourth in Iowa<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/epolls\/2008\/president\/nh\/new_hampshire_republican_primary-193.html\">fifth in New Hampshire<\/a>, according to Real Clear Politics polling averages.<br \/>\nAnd, as far as principle goes, aren&#8217;t Mitt Romney, John McCain, and Mike Huckabee all currently to the right of Thompson on abortion? Thus, God-o-Meter takes the endorsement as more evidence&#8211;as if it were needed&#8211;of disarray in the Christian Right.
