{"id":894,"date":"2010-01-29T12:00:46","date_gmt":"2010-01-29T12:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/freshliving\/2010\/01\/ipad-for-men-only.html"},"modified":"2010-01-29T12:00:46","modified_gmt":"2010-01-29T12:00:46","slug":"ipad-for-men-only","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/freshliving\/2010\/01\/ipad-for-men-only.html","title":{"rendered":"iPad: For Men Only?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I became a Mac convert a couple of years ago when I replaced my spyware-laden PC with a big, shiny, clean iMac.&nbsp; So I watched with some interest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/ipad\/#video\" target=\"_blank\">this promo video<\/a> for the new iPad, sort of in a curious, what&#8217;s-new-and-exciting-here kind of way.<\/p>\n<p>Something bothered me about the vid, though, and it wasn&#8217;t until the second viewing that I put my finger on it: the video was all men.&nbsp; Every Apple employee who had worked on the product&#8230;.male.&nbsp; Every hand that was shown demonstrating the iPad&#8217;s bells and whistles&#8230;.male.&nbsp; Every torso shown relaxing with a movie or an email or a calendar&#8230;.male. <\/p>\n<p>Well, ok, not <i>every<\/i> one.&nbsp; As the screenshot below shows, the bosom of a woman does make a brief appearance in one of the torso-relaxing shots, as she&#8217;s being shown the iPad by&#8230;.a man.<\/p>\n<p>I know there&#8217;s lots of snickering going on about the iPad&#8217;s name being reminiscent of menstrual hygeine (did you hear <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colbertnation.com\/home\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Colbert&#8217;s<\/a> line last night about the iPad&#8217;s alternate name: the TamPod?).&nbsp; But come on &#8211; is anyone else as annoyed as I am that the hot new technology is&#8211;in the year 2010&#8211;being marketed as fun, smart, hip, and cutting-edge&#8230;.and made by and for men?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/ipad\/#video\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to watch the full video.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>What am I missing here? <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/freshliving\/Picture%202.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Picture 2.png\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/84\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/01\/Picture%202-thumb-450x261-11125.png\" class=\"mt-image-none\" height=\"261\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Like what you see? <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/feedburner.google.com\/fb\/a\/mailverify?uri=FreshLiving&amp;amp;loc=en_US\"><font color=\"#023d89\"><strong>Click here to subscribe<\/strong><\/font><\/a><strong> and get Fresh Living in your in-box every day!<\/strong> <\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I became a Mac convert a couple of years ago when I replaced my spyware-laden PC with a big, shiny, clean iMac.&nbsp; So I watched with some interest this promo video for the new iPad, sort of in a curious, what&#8217;s-new-and-exciting-here kind of way.
