This one is about reducing inflammation, a firey condition that arises from stress and other factors&nbsp;and makes&nbsp;us vulnerable to diseases like cancer, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer&#8217;s.&nbsp;and many others. (Thanks to blog&nbsp;sistah <a href=\"http:\/\/la-mandala.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stacie Stukin <\/a>for her <a href=\"http:\/\/la-mandala.blogspot.com\/2010\/01\/yoga-reduces-inflammation.html\">heads-up on this<\/a>.) <\/p>\n<p>This particular <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2010\/01\/100111122643.htm\" target=\"_blank\">yoga&nbsp;study<\/a>, done at Ohio State University and&nbsp;published in&nbsp;<i><a class=\"textTag\" href=\"http:\/\/www.psychosomaticmedicine.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"tag\"><font color=\"#0e3266\">Psychosomatic Medicine<\/font><\/a><\/i>, showed that women who practiced relaxing, restorative yoga regularly (at least twice a week) had a lower level of the&nbsp;cytokine (a substance secreted by immune system cells)&nbsp;<a class=\"textTag\" href=\"http:\/\/www.physorg.com\/tags\/interleukin+6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"tag\"><font color=\"#0e3266\">interleukin-6<\/font><\/a> (IL-6) in their blood, a key culprit in instigating&nbsp;inflammation.&nbsp;It also found that those women maintained a lower level of&nbsp;IL-6 when exposed to stressful situations. (The image at left of the red curls is a <a href=\"http:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:PDB_1il6_EBI.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">graphic representation of IL-6<\/a>&#8211;say &#8220;cheese,&#8221; little cytokine!)<\/p>\n<p>Since yoga has so many elements&#8211;breathing, stretching, paying attention&#8211;it&#8217;s hard to know which parts we can extract and apply to reducing stress outside of yoga for non-yogis.&nbsp;But this study does underline the fact that&nbsp;stress has a&nbsp;tangible, immediate&nbsp;impact on our&nbsp;blood, bodies, and lives.
