{"id":79,"date":"2009-09-30T15:15:13","date_gmt":"2009-09-30T15:15:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/freshliving\/2009\/09\/how-to-survive-new-furniture.html"},"modified":"2009-09-30T15:15:13","modified_gmt":"2009-09-30T15:15:13","slug":"how-to-survive-new-furniture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/freshliving\/2009\/09\/how-to-survive-new-furniture.html","title":{"rendered":"How to Survive New Furniture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/freshliving\/DiningRoom.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"DiningRoom.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/84\/import\/assets_c\/2009\/09\/DiningRoom-thumb-215x218-8183.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"margin: 0pt 20px 20px 0pt;float: left\" height=\"218\" width=\"215\" \/><\/a><\/span>Yesterday was an exciting day&#8211;our new dining room furniture arrived.&nbsp; It&#8217;s beautiful, and we quickly figured out how we wanted to lay it out and started dreaming about Thanksgiving dinner.&nbsp; But then we opened the doors of our new sideboard.<\/p>\n<p>Pee-yew!&nbsp; The &#8220;new furniture smell&#8221; inside the sideboard&#8217;s drawers and cabinets is significant.&nbsp; And it&#8217;s serious, given the health and indoor air pollution consequences we know come from the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/freshliving\/2009\/04\/indoor-air-quality-whats-a-voc.html\">VOCs (volatile organic compounds)<\/a> that lurk in the wood glues and varnishes that hold most new furniture together.<\/p>\n<p>I have no desire to spend the next few weeks with headaches, coughing, or worse.&nbsp; So I&#8217;m on a &#8220;power-offgassing&#8221; program that so far includes opening each cabinet and drawer wide, placing a &#8220;Vornado&#8221; fan in the room, throwing the windows all the way open, and blasting fresh air into every nook and cranny.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, yesterday and today were dry, crisp fall days, so the air is more than welcome inside.&nbsp; And when we recently did the same project on our bedroom set&#8211;which was low-emitting but still smelled a tad&#8211;we noticed a significant reduction in the smell after just a few days.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>I just learned of another solution&#8211;or a supplementary one if you have the chance to institute Operation Open Windows.&nbsp; Zeolite rocks are volcanic substances that are seriously porous, which means that they&#8217;ll absorb all kinds of things.&nbsp; People use them in gardens to clean up spoiled soil, and they use them indoors to leach the toxins from carpets, furniture, and other offgassing menaces.&nbsp; According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allergystore.com\/odorcontrol.htm\" target=\"blank\">AllergyStore.com<\/a>, placing the rocks in direct sunlight for 1 hour allows them to expel the toxins they&#8217;ve absorbed, making them re-usable for years.&nbsp; Intriguing!&nbsp; <b>Has anyone ever used Zeolite?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>I also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dld123.com\/q&amp;a\/index.php?cid=1574\" target=\"_blank\">read here<\/a> about the ability of a bowl of white vinegar to remove odors (or does it just make the room smell like vinegar?&nbsp; Hmm&#8230;.) including cigarette smoke.&nbsp; I might have to try that too.<\/p>\n<p>How do you cope with offgassing?&nbsp; Are you super-sensitive, like me, or do you not even notice &#8220;new furniture smell?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(image&#8211;which is not my set!&#8211;via: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nikkoshops.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.nikkoshops.com\/<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Like what you see? <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/feedburner.google.com\/fb\/a\/mailverify?uri=FreshLiving&amp;amp;loc=en_US\"><font color=\"#023d89\"><strong>Click here to subscribe<\/strong><\/font><\/a><strong> and get Fresh Living in your in-box every day!<\/strong><br \/>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday was an exciting day&#8211;our new dining room furniture arrived.&nbsp; It&#8217;s beautiful, and we quickly figured out how we wanted to lay it out and started dreaming about Thanksgiving dinner.&nbsp; But then we opened the doors of our new sideboard.
