Chen writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is unclear whether such engagement adds to or<br \/>\ndetracts from a therapeutic patient-doctor relationship, and clinicians<br \/>\nare unsure about what constitutes good standards of care and<br \/>\nprofessional responsibility on these platforms. For example, should<br \/>\ndoctors give out diagnoses or prescribe treatment on Facebook or a<br \/>\nblog? If doctors and patients communicate on <a href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/business\/companies\/twitter\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\" title=\"More articles about Twitter.\">Twitter<\/a>, is a doctor liable if she or he misses a patient&#8217;s tweets about the acute onset of shortness of breath? <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>On the possible benefits front, she writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Social media platforms can turn 10- or 20-minute doctor&#8217;s visits into<br \/>\nan ongoing dialogue, where sources of information and, potentially,<br \/>\nsupport are continually available to the patient and the doctor.<br \/>\n&#8220;Platforms like Twitter can be powerful if doctors are a lot more<br \/>\nactive in disseminating their expertise,&#8221; Dr. Khozin said. &#8220;Patients<br \/>\nare being bombarded with information online, but I don&#8217;t think all that<br \/>\ninformation necessarily empowers them.
