What<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8216;<\/span>s Breath<br \/>\nCancer? It<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8216;<\/span>s the<br \/>\ncancer that attacks the organ behind the breast, the organ we cannot live<br \/>\nwithout.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"> <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">Its proper name is Lung Cancer. But I prefer to call it<br \/>\nBreath Cancer, because it literally and permanently takes the breath from a<br \/>\njumbo jet-full of people every day.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"> <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">I bet you<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8216;<\/span>re<br \/>\nwondering if I smoked. Did you know that up to 20% of people with Breath Cancer<br \/>\nnever smoked, 60% don<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8216;<\/span>t<br \/>\ncurrently smoke, and most of us wince at the question?<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"> <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">People don<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8216;<\/span>t<br \/>\nask Breast Cancer survivors whether they<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8216;<\/span>re<br \/>\noverweight or drank wine (raises the risk), exercised (lowers risk), or got<br \/>\nregular mammograms. Is this partly because Breast Cancer is sexualized? As the<br \/>\nnew <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/awesomer\/save-the-boobs-cci\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8220;<\/span>Save the<br \/>\nBoobs<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8220;<\/span> PSA<\/a> shows,<br \/>\nbreasts are beautiful. And the thought of losing them? Terrifying. No blame, no<br \/>\nshame to Breast Cancer.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"> <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">Not so with Breath Cancer. Although it<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8216;<\/span>s usually caused by<br \/>\nsmoking <span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8212;<\/span> which like<br \/>\novereating, is a lifestyle choice <span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8212;<\/span><br \/>\nmost fighting the disease don<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8216;<\/span>t<br \/>\nsmoke. But that shouldn<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8216;<\/span>t<br \/>\nmatter anyway. Cancer is cancer. I lost one friend to Breast, another to Colon,<br \/>\nanother to Breath Cancer. Did one deserve to live more than another?<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"> <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">It<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8216;<\/span>s<br \/>\nchallenging to be a Breath Cancer survivor during October because everyone cares so vocally about Breast Cancer. And although Breath Cancer kills twice as many<br \/>\nwomen, during Lung Cancer Awareness Month (November), you won<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8216;<\/span>t see invisible ribbons (the non-color of<br \/>\nBreath Cancer) used to hawk everything from tissues to tampons.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"> <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">Stigma has kept Breath Cancer deplorably underfunded. And<br \/>\nthat<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8216;<\/span>s why only 15%<br \/>\nof us live longer than five years. That<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\">&#8216;<\/span>s<br \/>\nunfair. So please. Care.<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman','serif'\"> <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecxMsoNormal\">And by the way, yes, I smoked, but quit almost 20 years before my<br \/>\ndiagnosis.
