{"id":1003,"date":"2010-04-07T11:25:57","date_gmt":"2010-04-07T11:25:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/freshliving\/2010\/04\/martina-navratilovas-breast-cancer-news.html"},"modified":"2010-04-07T11:25:57","modified_gmt":"2010-04-07T11:25:57","slug":"martina-navratilovas-breast-cancer-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/freshliving\/2010\/04\/martina-navratilovas-breast-cancer-news.html","title":{"rendered":"Martina Navratilova&#8217;s Breast Cancer News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/freshliving\/martina1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"martina1.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/84\/import\/assets_c\/2010\/04\/martina1-thumb-222x153-12702.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"float: left;margin: 0pt 20px 20px 0pt\" height=\"153\" width=\"222\" \/><\/a><\/span>The news today that tennis legend Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with breast cancer was something of a roller coaster.&nbsp; First there was the &#8220;No!&#8221; feeling we get whenever someone we admire is stricken with an illness.&nbsp; Learning that an athlete we admire has been diagnosed feels somehow even harder.&nbsp; As she told People magazine, &#8220;I feel so in control of my life and my body, and then this comes, and<br \/>\nit&#8217;s completely out of my hands.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But then, something of a rescue&#8211;the &#8220;aah&#8221; of learning that Navratilova&#8217;s cancer&#8211;called DCIS&#8211;is non-invasive and highly treatable.&nbsp; &#8220;There&#8217;s only a one-percent chance of anyone with this diagnosis would<br \/>\ndie of breast cancer,&#8221; physician Shelley Hwang told the media.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the reminder to all of us.&nbsp; Navratilova, 53, said that she had gone 4 years since her last mammogram, a decision she says she now regrets:&nbsp; &#8220;Everyone gets busy, but don&#8217;t make excuses. I stay in shape and eat<br \/>\nright, and it happened to me.
