Veteran Hollywood actor Tom Skerritt, best known for his memorable roles in \u201cPicket Fences,\u201d \u201cTop Gun,\u201d and \u201cAlien,\u201d has died at the age of 93.<\/p>\n

Skerritt died Wednesday, October 21, of natural causes, his publicist told Variety<\/em>. His death marks the loss of a familiar Hollywood face whose career spanned more than six decades.<\/p>\n

With his rugged appearance, distinctive mustache and commanding presence, Skerritt was a versatile actor known for roles ranging from military officers and sheriffs to fathers and religious leaders.<\/p>\n

He was perhaps best known to television audiences for playing Sheriff Jimmy Brock on the CBS drama \u201cPicket Fences,\u201d which aired from 1992 to 1996. The role earned him a Primetime Emmy Award in 1993, along with another nomination the following year.<\/p>\n

Moviegoers will remember Skerritt as Commander Mike \u201cViper\u201d Metcalf, the seasoned flight instructor who mentored Tom Cruise\u2019s character in the 1986 blockbuster \u201cTop Gun.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also starred as Captain Dallas in Ridley Scott\u2019s groundbreaking 1979 science-fiction horror film \u201cAlien,\u201d appearing alongside Sigourney Weaver.<\/p>\n

One of Skerritt\u2019s most meaningful dramatic roles came in the 1992 film \u201cA River Runs Through It,\u201d directed by Robert Redford.<\/p>\n

In the acclaimed drama, Skerritt portrayed the Rev. John Maclean, a Presbyterian minister raising two sons, played by Brad Pitt and Craig Sheffer, in early 20th-century Montana.<\/p>\n

The film explores faith, family, forgiveness and the bonds between parents and children. Skerritt\u2019s character is a devoted minister whose Christian beliefs shape his household as he struggles to understand his sons\u2019 different paths.<\/p>\n

Variety<\/em> praised his performance, writing that Skerritt \u201cdiscreetly reveals the loving core inside the reedy exterior of the boys\u2019 preacher father.\u201d<\/p>\n

Skerritt portrayed a man of deep Christian faith in the film, but the character\u2019s beliefs should not be confused with the actor\u2019s views.<\/p>\n

Born Thomas Roy Skerritt in Detroit, Michigan, in 1933, he served in the U.S. Air Force and attended Wayne State University and UCLA before pursuing a career in acting.<\/p>\n

He made his feature film debut in the 1962 Korean War drama \u201cWar Hunt\u201d and gained wider recognition in Robert Altman\u2019s 1970 film \u201cMASH,\u201d playing surgeon Duke Forrest.<\/p>\n

His extensive film credits also included \u201cThe Turning Point,\u201d \u201cThe Dead Zone,\u201d \u201cSteel Magnolias,\u201d \u201cContact,\u201d and \u201cTears of the Sun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Skerritt remained active in television well beyond his \u201cPicket Fences\u201d years, appearing in popular series including \u201cCheers,\u201d \u201cThe West Wing,\u201d \u201cBrothers & Sisters,\u201d \u201cThe Good Wife,\u201d and \u201cMadam Secretary.\u201d<\/p>\n

Away from the spotlight, Skerritt was married three times. His first two marriages, to Charlotte Shanks and Sue Oran, ended in divorce. He married Julie Tokashiki in 1998.<\/p>\n

He is survived by Tokashiki and his four children, Andy, Matt, Erin and Colin.<\/p>\n
