James Van Der Beek, the actor who endeared himself to a generation of television viewers as the star of the drama series Dawson\u2019s Creek, died Wednesday. He was 48.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,\u201d a statement shared on his Instagram account Wednesday read. \u201cHe met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.\u201d<\/p>\n

Van Der Beek had been quietly battling stage 3 colorectal cancer since August 2023. The father of six initially kept his diagnosis private, focusing on treatment and his overall health. But in November 2024, he revealed the news publicly after learning that \u201ca tabloid was going to run with the news.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been dealing with this privately until now, getting treatment and dialing in my overall health with greater focus than ever before,\u201d he told People magazine at the time. \u201cI\u2019m in a good place and feeling strong. It\u2019s been quite the initiation, and I\u2019ll tell you more when I\u2019m ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout his battle, Van Der Beek displayed remarkable honesty and humility. On his 48th birthday in March, he shared the emotional toll the illness had taken on him. He admitted he \u201ccould no longer be the husband that was helpful to [his] wife\u201d and \u201ccould no longer be a father, who could pick up his kids and put them and be there for them.\u201d For a man devoted to his family, those limitations weighed heavily.<\/p>\n

He leaned on his wife, Kimberly, and their six children \u2014 Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn, and Jeremiah \u2014 during the most difficult days. When cancer treatments placed a financial strain on the family, Van Der Beek began selling autographed Varsity Blues merchandise to help fund his care, a reminder that even well-known actors are not immune to the burdens that serious illness can bring.<\/p>\n

Despite his health struggles, he continued to show up when he could. He attended the red carpet premiere of Tubi\u2019s Sidelined: The QB And Me and even made a surprise virtual appearance at a \u201cDawson\u2019s Creek\u201d reunion after being forced to cancel in-person plans due to illness. \u201cI can\u2019t believe I\u2019m not there,\u201d he told the crowd in New York City. \u201cI can\u2019t believe I don\u2019t get to see my \u2026 beautiful cast in person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Van Der Beek first captured hearts in the late 1990s as Dawson Leery on Dawson\u2019s Creek, starring alongside Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, Michelle Williams, and Busy Philipps. He later appeared in films such as Varsity Blues and The Rules of Attraction, building a career that spanned more than 60 film and television projects.<\/p>\n

Yet beyond the fame and credits, those closest to him remember something deeper. The statement announcing his passing highlighted his \u201ccourage, faith, and grace\u201d \u2014 words that speak to a man who sought to face suffering with strength and purpose.<\/p>\n

Colorectal cancer carries an overall five-year survival rate of 64 percent, though outcomes vary depending on the stage. Van Der Beek\u2019s openness about his diagnosis in his final year brought awareness to the disease and the importance of early detection.<\/p>\n
