Former New York Jets great Nick Mangold, a fan favorite and locker-room leader, has died at 41 \u2014 just 12 days after revealing that he needed a kidney transplant. His passing comes as a shock to many who admired not only his talent on the field but also his kindness, humor, and faith-filled strength off it.<\/p>\n

Mangold, who spent 11 seasons anchoring the Jets\u2019 offensive line, was known for his toughness, his trademark long hair and beard, and his everyman charm. Drafted in the first round in 2006, he quickly became the heart of the team. \u201cNick was more than a legendary center,\u201d Jets owner Woody Johnson said in a statement. \u201cHe was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football.\u201d<\/p>\n

After his retirement in 2016, Mangold was inducted into the Jets Ring of Honor in 2022 \u2014 a moment he marked with his trademark humor by cracking open a beer on stage at MetLife Stadium. He had always been the kind of player who could keep things light even during intense moments. Former teammate Damien Woody recalled, \u201cNick was a jokester, man, he always kept everything funny. He always had those one-liners that would get you in the moment. He was a family guy that would give you the shirt off his back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mangold revealed earlier this month that he had lived with a genetic defect since 2006 that led to chronic kidney disease. He shared that he had endured a \u201crough summer\u201d and was undergoing dialysis while awaiting a transplant. \u201cI always knew this day would come,\u201d he said at the time, \u201cbut I thought I would have had more time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Jets coach Rex Ryan broke down on ESPN as he remembered the player who meant so much to him personally. \u201cIt\u2019s brutal. Such a great young man,\u201d Ryan said through tears. \u201cMy last game, Mangold\u2019s injured \u2014 like injured \u2014 and he comes to me and says, \u2018I\u2019m playing this game.\u2019 And he went in and played for me. That\u2019s what I remember about this kid. He was awesome and just way too young.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mike Tannenbaum, who served as general manager during Mangold\u2019s tenure, echoed that sentiment. \u201cThere\u2019s no way we would\u2019ve had the success we had without him,\u201d he said. \u201cHe had broad shoulders and in the good times and bad times he held people accountable, but he did it in a way that people really enjoyed being around him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mangold leaves behind his wife, Jenny, and their four children \u2014 Matthew, Eloise, Thomas, and Charlotte. As teammates, fans, and friends mourn his passing, they remember a man whose strength wasn\u2019t just physical \u2014 it was in his compassion, loyalty, and joy.<\/p>\n
