Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in 1946, Keaton was the oldest of four children. She later adopted her mother\u2019s maiden name, Keaton, for her stage career since \u201cDiane Hall\u201d was already taken by another actress. From an early age, she was drawn to performing, inspired by her mother, whom she once described as \u201cbeautiful\u2026my advocate\u201d who \u201csecretly in her heart of hearts probably wanted to be an entertainer of some kind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Keaton\u2019s big break came in 1972 when Francis Ford Coppola cast her as Kay Adams in \u201cThe Godfather.\u201d She admitted years later she had no idea what the film was even about at the time of her audition. \u201cI think the kindest thing that someone\u2019s ever done for me \u2026 is that I got cast to be in The Godfather and I didn\u2019t even read it. I didn\u2019t know a single thing,\u201d she told People in 2022.<\/p>\n

Her performance alongside Al Pacino in the film and its sequels made her a household name, but it was 1977\u2019s \u201cAnnie Hall\u201d that cemented her place in movie history. Playing the title character, Keaton\u2019s natural style\u2014oversized jackets, vests, and ties\u2014became iconic, and her performance won her the Academy Award for Best Actress. Looking back, she wrote in her 2020 memoir Brother & Sister, \u201cI wanted to be a movie star. I wanted people \u2013 lots of people I didn\u2019t know \u2013 to love me.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was a mental illness,\u201d she once said. Therapy eventually helped her heal, though she admitted it robbed her of some of her early experiences.<\/p>\n

Keaton never married, calling herself an \u201coddball\u201d who was glad to have stayed single. Still, motherhood became an important chapter of her life when she adopted her daughter Dexter in 1996 and son Duke in 2001. \u201cMotherhood was not an urge I couldn\u2019t resist, it was more like a thought I\u2019d been thinking for a very long time. So I plunged in,\u201d she once explained.<\/p>\n

Beyond acting, Keaton directed films like \u201cHanging Up,\u201d authored memoirs, and even appeared in Justin Bieber\u2019s 2021 music video \u201cGhost.\u201d She was also a passionate advocate for animals.
