Actress Katherine Helmond died on Friday, March 1, 2019, in her Los Angeles home. She was 89 years old at the time of her death. The cause of death was reported to have been complications from Alzheimer\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n

“She was the love of my life. We spent 57 beautiful, wonderful, loving years together, which I will treasure forever,” her husband, David Christian, said. “I’ve been with Katherine since I was 19 years old. The night she died, I saw that the moon was exactly half-full, just as I am now… half of what I’ve been my entire adult life.”<\/p>\n

Helmond was known for stealing the show when she was on screen in \u201cWho\u2019s the Boss?\u201d and \u201cSoap.\u201d She performed as an actress for nearly five decades and was nominated for multiple Emmy Awards. She also won two Golden Globes in 1981 and 1989. The Globes were won for her work on \u201cSoap,\u201d where she played lovably naive Jessica Tate, and \u201cWho\u2019s the Boss,\u201d where Helmond portrayed the feisty mother Mona Robinson.<\/p>\n

In addition to her well-known television roles, Helmond also appeared in films and on stage. She earned a Tony Award in 1973 for her performance in Eugene O\u2019Neill\u2019s \u201cThe Great God Brown.\u201d She also appeared in the films \u201cTime Bandits,\u201d \u201cBrazil,\u201d \u201cFear and Loathing in Las Vegas\u201d and had a voice role for the animated Pixar film \u201cCars.\u201d<\/p>\n

Helmond\u2019s fellow actors and celebrities have spoken fondly of her following her death. Tony Danza called the actress a \u201cnational treasure\u201d and said \u201cno words can measure my love.\u201d Similarly, Alyssa Milano stated that Helmond was \u201cbeautiful, kind, funny, gracious, compassionate\u201d and \u201can instrumental part of my life.\u201d Joe Mantegna also said that Helmond was \u201ca joy and an inspiration in my career and life.\u201d<\/p>\n
