His death was confirmed by the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in a statement that said, \u201cJohn Mahoney passed away due to complications from cancer while in hospice care on Sunday.\u201d In recognition of Mahoney\u2019s death, the theater canceled its opening night for \u201cYou Got Older.\u201d They encouraged ticketholders to instead gather at the theater on Monday evening for remembrances and a moment of silence.<\/p>\n<p>Mahoney was born in Blackpool, England and moved to the U.S. when he was 19.\u00a0 He taught English at Western Illinois University and edited a medical magazine before deciding to study acting in Chicago when he was in his late 30s. The founding members of Steppenwolf Theatre Company, John Malkovich and Gary Sinise, invited Mahoney to join the theater shortly after he began acting. The theater at the time was filled with young actors, and they needed someone to play the older characters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the time I started my career, most people had given up and started selling insurance,\u201d Mahoney said. \u201cI didn\u2019t have so much competition.\u201d During his state career, Mahoney appeared in \u201cPrelude to a Kiss,\u201d \u201cThe Outgoing Tide,\u201d \u201cThe Birthday Party\u201d and \u201cThe House of Blue Leaves\u201d for which he won a Tony Award in 1986. It was his film career, however, that made Mahoney\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p>John Mahoney is best known for playing the grouchy, sharp-witted Martin Crane on the show \u201cFrasier.\u201d The show ran for 11 seasons between 1993 and 2004. Mahoney received a SAG Award, two Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe nominations for his work on \u201cFrasier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside of \u201cFrasier,\u201d Mahoney had a flourishing film and TV career. He had a reoccurring role in \u201cHot in Cleveland\u201d as Betty White\u2019s love interest and was praised for his performance of an anguished CEO in season 2 of HBO\u2019s \u201cIn Treatment.\u201d Mahoney also appeared in \u201cER,\u201d \u201cBurn Notice,\u201d \u201cCheers\u201d and \u201c3rd Rock from the Sun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During his 35 years in film, Mahoney had roles in \u201cThe American President,\u201d \u201cMoonstruck,\u201d \u201cIn the Line of Fire,\u201d \u201cSay Anything,\u201d \u201cEight Men Out,\u201d \u201cFlipped\u201d and \u201cBarton Fink.\u201d He also worked as a \u00a0voice actor for the animated films \u201cAntz\u201d and \u201cAtlantis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel issued a statement mourning the loss of the prolific actor. \u201cJohn Mahoney was a fixture on the Chicago state for more than 30 years through countless award-winning performances,\u201d Emanuel said. \u201cEven as his fame grew through his fantastic work in movies and television, John stayed connected to his artistic home here in Chicago in theaters and as a member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. Though he will be missed, his work and impact will endure for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prior to his death, it was believed that Mahoney\u2019s health was improving after he beat his Stage 3 throat cancer. Steppenwolf Theatre artistic director Anna D. Shapiro, however, felt that the cancer left him in an extremely fragile state. \u201cHe was supposed to be having a routine procedure. But\u2026.I think he was just too weak,\u201d Shapiro said. \u201cBy the time he did \u2018The Rembrandt\u2019 he was clean of cancer\u2026but other health issues came up, and he was just too fragile.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cold comfort though it may be, Mahoney was able to spend his last days in Chicago, the city he loved. \u201cThe city is almost like a person to me,\u201d Mahoney said after moving back to Chicago in 2004. \u201cI can\u2019t tell you why my heart is so full of Chicago, but it\u2019s where I want to be. When I\u2019m not here, I\u2019m not as happy.\u201d Though Chicago may be the city that he loved best, Mahoney will be mourned by more than just Chicago natives.
