Actress Kirstie Alley, star of the big and small screens known for her Emmy-winning role on \u201cCheers\u201d and films like \u201cLook Who\u2019s Talking,\u201d has died after a brief battle with cancer, her children True and Lillie Parker announced on her\u00a0social media<\/a>. She was 71.<\/p>\n

The statement read, \u201cWe are sad to inform you that our incredible, fierce and loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, only recently discovered.\u201d The family\u2019s statement continued, \u201cShe was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead. As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur mother\u2019s zest and passion for life, her children, grandchildren and her many animals, not to mention her eternal joy of creating, were unparalleled and leave us inspired to live life to the fullest just as she did,\u201d the statement said. A two-time Primetime Emmy Award winner, Alley was born in Wichita, Kansas, in 1951. After a standout role in 1982\u2019s \u201cStar Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,\u201d she played roles in movies like 1984\u2019s \u201cBlind Date\u201d and 1987\u2019s \u201cSummer School\u201d opposite Mark Harmon.<\/p>\n

That same year, Alley would follow Shelley Long to play the lead opposite Ted Danson in the latter part of the TV classic sitcom \u201cCheers,\u201d which premiered in 1982. Alley first appeared in 1987, playing strong and independent bar manager Rebecca Howe, staying on the acclaimed show until it ended in 1993.<\/p>\n

After winning the Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series in 1991 for \u201cCheers\u201d and another for lead actress in a miniseries or special for 1994\u2019s \u201cDavid\u2019s Mother,\u201d she again found TV success in the late \u201990s with the series \u201cVeronica\u2019s Closet,\u201d which scored her another Emmy nod.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Alley starred in several memorable films, like the \u201cLook Who\u2019s Talking\u201d movies, 1990\u2019s \u201cMadhouse\u201d and 1999\u2019s \u201cDrop Dead Gorgeous\u201d with Ellen Barkin. In 2005, Alley co-wrote and starred in the Showtime comedy \u201cFat Actress\u201d before making a foray into reality TV. She appeared in \u201cKirstie Alley\u2019s Big Life\u201d in 2010, was a contestant on Season 12 of ABC\u2019s \u201cDancing with the Stars\u201d the next year and placed second on Season 22 of the British version of \u201cCelebrity Big Brother\u201d in 2018. In 2022, she competed in Season 7 of Fox\u2019s \u201cThe Masked Singer.\u201d<\/p>\n

After news of Alley\u2019s death broke, several celebrities shared their condolences. John Travolta, who costarred with Alley in 1989\u2019s hit \u201cLook Who\u2019s Talking\u201d and two sequels, wrote on\u00a0Instagram<\/a>\u00a0on Monday, \u201cKirstie was one of the most special relationships I\u2019ve ever had. I love you, Kirstie. I know we will see each other again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alley\u2019s \u201cCheers\u201d co-star Ted Danson told\u00a0Deadline<\/a>\u00a0he had just watched Alley in an episode of the show while on a plane before learning of her death.
