You probably recognize him as Captain von Trapp in the iconic film \u2018The Sound of Music,\u2019 but with a career that spanned more than 50 years, he is remembered for an even more diverse catalogue of work.<\/p>\n

At 82, he became the oldest Academy Award-winning actor in history. Playing opposite July Andrews as Captain von Trapp was his most recognized role, and what made him a star.<\/p>\n

In recent years, he starred in the film \u201cThe Girl With the Dragon Tattoo\u201d and as the villain’s voice in 2009\u2019s \u201cUp.\u201d He also played the canny lawyer in Broadway\u2019s \u201cInherit the Wind,\u201d and in 2019 starred as murder mystery novelist in \u201cKnives Out.\u201d He also made his way to tv in the suspense drama series \u201cDeparture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Julie Andrews and more stars shared touching tributes, with many taking to social media to honor Plummer\u2019s legacy. Andrews called Plummer a \u201ccherished friend\u201d in a statement.<\/p>\n

“The world has lost a consummate actor today, and I have lost a cherished friend,” Andrews said in a statement obtained by ABC News. “I treasure the memories of our work together and all the humor and fun we shared through the years. My heart and condolences go out to his lovely wife Elaine, and his daughter Amanda.”<\/p>\n

Actor Chris Evans, who starred alongside Plummer in \u201cKnives Out,\u201d said the actor\u2019s death is an \u201cunbelievable loss.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is truly heartbreaking. What an unbelievable loss. Few careers have such longevity and impact. One of my favorite memories from Knives Out was playing piano together in the Thrombey house between set ups. He was a lovely man and a legendary talent,\u201d Evans tweeted.<\/p>\n

The official \u201cSound of Music\u201d Twitter account shared a special note about the actor\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe’re saddened to hear of Christopher Plummer\u2019s passing. His legacy as our Captain will live on in THE SOUND OF MUSIC forever. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this time,\u201d the tweet said.<\/p>\n

Plummer passed away at his Connecticut home with his wife of 53 years, Elaine Taylor, by his side.<\/p>\n
