In relating the events of Jesus\u2019 temptation, Matthew presents Satan (\u201cthe devil\u201d) without any introduction or explanation except to say he is a \u201ctempter.\u201d The assumption appears to be that Matthew\u2019s Jewish readers a) already knew who Satan was, and b) accepted that Satan was a literal, living being.<\/p>\n

Satan\u2019s name in Hebrew (\u015b\u1fb1t\u1fb1n<\/i>) and Greek (satanas<\/i>) mean the same thing: \u201cadversary.\u201d In the New Testament he\u2019s commonly called \u201cthe devil\u201d (diabolos<\/i>) which means \u201cone who slanders or accuses.\u201d<\/p>\n
