He argues that matters of &#8220;human flourishing&#8221;&#8211;which have traditionally been considered the milieu of faith, religion and philosophy&#8211;can and should be a matter of scientific and factual observation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" color=\"#000000\" face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" color=\"#000000\" face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;\">In his talk, Harris asks a series of compelling questions:&nbsp;<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\" style=\"margin: 0 0 0 40px; border: none; padding: 0px;\">\n<div>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" color=\"#000000\" face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;\"><i><br \/><\/i><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px; \"><i>&#8220;How have we convinced ourselves that in the moral sphere there is no such thing as moral expertise or moral talent or moral genius, even?&nbsp;<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px; \"><i>How have we convinced ourselves that every opinion has to count?&nbsp;<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px; \"><i>How have we convinced ourselves that every culture has a point of view on these subjects that is worth considering?&#8221;<\/i><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px; \">He also calls suggests to his peers that what the world needs now is for <i>&#8220;people like ourselves to admit that there are right and wrong answers to questions of human flourishing and morality relates to that domain of facts.&#8221;<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" color=\"#000000\" face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" color=\"#000000\" face=\"arial, helvetica, sans-serif\" size=\"3\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;\">Calling into question the notion of moral relativism and suggesting that neuroscience rather than God and religion is the path to moral enlightenment, Harris is opening a new conversation about morality and science that I find fascinating.
