{"id":3023,"date":"2012-11-02T12:30:13","date_gmt":"2012-11-02T12:30:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/fellowshipofsaintsandsinners\/?p=3023"},"modified":"2018-07-19T20:16:12","modified_gmt":"2018-07-19T20:16:12","slug":"3023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/fellowshipofsaintsandsinners\/2012\/11\/3023.html","title":{"rendered":"The Uncomfortable Evangelist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Author Jana Riess, whose book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Flunking-Sainthood-Breaking-Forgetting-Neighbor\/dp\/1557256608\"><em>Flunking Sainthood: A Year of Breaking the Sabbath, Forgetting to Pray and Still Loving My Neighbor<\/em><\/a>, is on my list of must-reads- you can find her regularly blogging for the Religion News Service at &#8220;Flunking Sainthood&#8221;- recently posted a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.religionnews.com\/blogs\/jana-riess\/uncomfortable-with-evangelism\">review<\/a> of the book, <em>Dinner with Muhammad<\/em>, by Marilyn Hickey.<\/p>\n<p>Tellingly, for Riess, reading Hickey&#8217;s book was an exploration of Riess&#8217; own discomforts with evangelism- many of which I, too, share.<\/p>\n<p>We evangelicals- and I count myself among them, insofar as someone like Karl Barth might be called an &#8220;evangelical&#8221; (and we could have a whole discussion about whether Barth really qualifies here)- place a high premium on evangelism. \u00a0We have good reason. \u00a0Jesus&#8217;\u00a0so-called &#8220;Great Commission&#8221; to &#8220;go and make disciples&#8221; appears in all of the Gospels. \u00a0The whole Acts narrative of the apostle Paul&#8217;s journey to plant churches from Jerusalem &#8220;to the ends of the earth&#8221; hangs on this command.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Making disciples&#8221; may <em>necessarily<\/em> require our discomfort. \u00a0But it is also true that &#8220;making disciples&#8221; should never demand our own &#8220;superiority,&#8221; which we evangelicals can tend to ground in a kind of reckless abandon to &#8220;certainty for certainty&#8217;s sake.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This is problematic, not too mention disingenuous. \u00a0There are very few things that as I grow older I realize I&#8217;m certain about. \u00a0I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;m alone here.<\/p>\n<p>Yet in much of the evangelical world, certainty around a pretty narrow set of beliefs becomes a kind of credential for evangelism- and, I might add, for our own superiority in interacting with so-called &#8220;unreached people groups,&#8221; such as Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>I applaud Riess for shining a light on the pitfalls of such approaches to evangelism.<\/p>\n<p><em>Have any of you read Hickey&#8217;s book?
